This was and still is a fantastic project, an international level success. Around 2010 we had a real chance to break the shackles in this country, when optimism and positivity came close to balancing out all the other stuff.
I remember the updates on the stations and tunnels - this was legit. So congrats to Jack for doing a world class job.

Gautrain tender for acquisition, refurbishment of pre-owned trains open

Gautrain concessionaire Bombela has issued two tenders related to the procurement of between five and seven pre-owned trains from the UK, for use on the Gautrain system.

The first offers are expected to arrive at the end of February, says Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) CEO William Dachs.

The GMA manages the Gautrain system on behalf of its owner, the Gauteng provincial government.

The first tender involves the procurement of the trains, while the other is focused on the local refurbishment of the trains once they have arrived.

Dachs notes that the GMA and Bombela have been forced to look to the UK for second-hand trains, as it has proved uneconomical to produce the low volume of rolling stock required locally.

A procurement process for the local production of new trains for the Gautrain ended in 2019, when no compliant bids were received.

“We were looking for the most cost-efficient trains that can be deployed quickly to solve the congestion problem we are experiencing during peak periods on the Gautrain.

“UK operators currently have a number of trains available as they are in the process of refleeting.”

The specifications of the Gautrain is also largely similar to those found on UK rail systems.

Also, the local refurbishment process is expected to be of higher value than the cost of procuring the trains and this will create opportunities for local businesses, adds Dachs.

Despite a stalling economy, the Gautrain is still experiencing congestion, he confirms.

Dachs believes the acquisition of the new rolling stock will be sufficient to deal with passenger numbers through the end of the current concession in 2026, plus two years.

The GMA hopes to have the new trains operational by 2022 or 2023.

Gautrain 2 can only realistically start at the end of 2024

Construction of the planned multi-billion rand expansion of the Gautrain rapid rail network, dubbed Gautrain 2, could realistically commence at the end of 2024, according to the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA).

But GMA CEO William Dachs also confirmed that its application to National Treasury for authorisation for the project in terms of Public Finance Management Act is still with National Treasury.

Funding could also prove problematic, particularly as the massive efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19 drain government’s already stretched coffers.

The destruction of the construction industry for various reasons, including a lack of work, non-payment or late payments and disruptions of construction sites, means the GMA could also have difficulty finding a South African construction company with the technical expertise and financial strength willing to take on such a large project.

Former GMA CEO Jack van der Merwe said last year the construction of Gautrain 2 was expected to start by July 2023 if President Cyril Ramaphosa and his cabinet allocated money to the National Development Plan (NDP) and started funding it.

However, Dachs said last week it will not be possible to start construction by 2023.

“Given the delays in approvals and the detailed design and planning, as well as land rights acquisition and the environmental authorisation process, a more realistic date for construction would be the end of 2024,” he said.

The current Gautrain network comprises 80km of rail along two route links: a link between Tshwane and Johannesburg and a link between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton.

Gautrain 2 comprises another 150km of rail and a further 19 stations.
