Classical Berlin

Even though Berlin often is pictured as being gritty, hipsterish and very modern, there's a lot more pre-war grandeur than most people expect.

I'll show you some classics first, before you get to see various hidden corners. :)

Brandenburg Gate:

Royal Library (part of Humboldt University now) at Bebelplatz (a lovely square in Mitte, close to the Museum Island):

The colourful thingies there are the infamous United Buddy Bears.

The square has a dark chapter - during the Nazi dictatorship, loads and loads of valuable books were burned at this place in '33, most from Jewish writers. There's an unassuming but very effective memorial dedicated to it ("Night of Shame Monument"):

It's symbolizing empty bookshelves. It's especially impressive at night.
There also is a little museum dedicated to the horrid events underground.
