Liverpool bids farewell to Superlambananas and gets ready to welcome Go Penguins

Jul 6 2009 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

A COLONY of more than 100 Empire penguins will take over Liverpool this winter.

The city will be turned into an Antarctic paradise as Go Penguins, the successor to last year’s hugely popular Go Superlambananas, hits the streets.

Penguins standing 3ft and 5ft tall will be on display for seven weeks from mid-November in a special city centre trail.

The event is being organised by Wild In Art, the group which was also behind the invasion of uniquely decorated Superlambananas during Capital of Culture.

It's done by the same company "Wild in Art" as the Superlambananas so I'd imagine this will be just as popular.

Looks like you were right. From Liverpool.com -

Go Penguins

In the city’s biggest public art project of 2009, sculptures of the Antarctic’s most famous resident will stand on locations around the city centre and the suburbs.

The exact numbers and location remain a closely guarded secret, but more will be revealed at the Mersey Pier Head on Monday 6th July, from 5:30pm.

There is also believed to be an elaborate storyline behind their arrival, which is likely to be revealed in due course.

Liverpool City Council has released a nationwide tender for an arts organisation to oversee the event, known as The Winter’s Trail.

A council spokesman said: “The Winter’s Trail is one of the key events for 2009, and we hope that this tender attracts ideas of the quality that made last year’s Superlambanana Parade such an outstanding event.”

A penguin was chosen as the subject of the animal trail during Liverpool’s Year of the Environment because of its association with global warming and the melting ice-caps.

Merseytravel launches competition for passengers to design their own giant penguin

Sep 8 2009 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

PASSENGERS on Merseyside public transport are being given the chance to design their own giant penguin.

Merseytravel is sponsoring this winter’s Go Penguins project which will see dozens of 5ft decorated birds colonise the city.

Go Penguins, commissioned by the city and organised by the Wild in Art organisation, follows the successful Go Superlambanana parade in Capital of Culture year.

Now Merseytravel is calling on train, boat and bus passengers to get involved by creating their own striking design for a penguin.

The winning entry will be turned into technicolor reality by a professional artist on one of three of Merseytravel’s 5ft penguins.

Another penguin will be designed by children at Claire House Hospice, and the third will be chosen by Merseytravel from ideas submitted through the Go Penguins call to artists submission process.

Merseytravel chairman Cllr Mark Dowd said: “The Superlambananas captured the public imagination so spectacularly last year and we hope Go Penguins will do likewise.”

Go Penguins designs unveiled for Liverpool winter arts project

Sep 17 2009 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

THEY’RE bold, inventive, funny, festive or environmentally-aware – meet some of the potential penguins set to populate Liverpool this winter.

More than 520 designs were submitted by artists for the Go Penguins initiative which will see dozens of 5ft flightless birds dotted across the city and beyond over Christmas.

Now Wild in Art, the organisation behind the initiative, has whittled down the entries to just under 200.

And today sponsors were due to get their chance to see the creative images on display at the Maritime Museum and choose which artist they would like to work with.

Go Penguins artist co-ordinator Katriona Beales said: “I’ve been blown away by the quality of the designs. We had more than 520 separate submissions – it’s been a mammoth task to go through them all.

“We’ve got 197 on show. We found a lot of artists submitted at least two and some up to 10 designs, so we’ve tried to be really fair about it and every artist has at least one that’s gone through to the show stage.”

Preview of Liverpool penguin-themed public art extravaganza held

Sep 18 2009 by Alan Weston, Liverpool Daily Post

WHAT Superlambananas were to Capital of Culture year, penguins are set to be for Christmas.

Designs were revealed at Liverpool’s Maritime Museum yesterday for the “Go Penguins” public art extravaganza, in preparation for the full-scale models going on display later this year.

Organisers are hoping the public art event will repeat the phenomenal success of last year’s Go Superlambananas.

This time, artists are being invited to submit their designs for penguins, which, from November 22, will start to appear all around the city centre for the festive season.

The preview, held at the Maritime Museum yesterday, was to allow potential business sponsors to inspect and adopt their own penguin design.

The entries were grouped around different categories such as Liverpool, the environment, festive, and people.

Inevitably, many of the designs were inspired by the Beatles, with one showing a group of penguins replicating the famous cover of the Abbey Road album, and another entitled Sgt Penguins’ Lovely Arctic Band.

This year, a number of the designs will feature in areas outside the city, like Wirral, Sefton, and St Helens.

Organisers from Wild in Art – the team who brought the city Go Superlambananas – were inundated with more than 500 penguin designs from local artists.

It's probably for the same reasons some of the Superlambananas ended up further afield last year. By nature of what they are, they attract interest. If someone sees one near where they live, they may want to find out more about them. Once they have discovered there is a whole colony dotted around the city, they may even decide to visit to see the others, thus bringing in tourist money to the local economy. Even if they don't visit, at the very least it shows that there are interesting and varied things going in Liverpool, thereby leaving a favourable impression of the city.

From the Echo -

There are just three weeks until the launch of Go Penguins

Nov 3 2009 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

THE countdown has begun for Liverpool’s very own march of the penguins.

Artists have less than three weeks to complete their designs for the giant 5ft birds which will populate the city’s streets and open spaces this Christmas.

Go Penguins, commissioned by Liverpool city council, is part of A Winter’s Trail which will see several major cultural organisations staging their own penguin related events to underpin Liverpool’s Christmas celebrations.

The penguins will be on display from November 22 until January 10 2010.
More than 140 large penguins and 90 “school” 3ft penguins are currently being designed.

A trail map will be available for people to search out the penguin colonies scattered around the city.

Wirral artist Amanda helps to prepare penguins for city exhibition

A WIRRAL artist has been commissioned to paint part of a penguin army that will soon be on display across Liverpool.

Amanda Oliphant is hand-painting two three-foot high baby penguin figurines that have taken up residence at the Contemporary Urban Centre, an art studio based in a Grade-II listed converted warehouse.

Hi all,

Just read in our local paper, The Wirral Globe, that Paul O'Grady has created a Penguin for the Go Penguins event.

It's called Owl Ma and is a penguin decorated to look like an old woman and will be on display in the Adelphi Hotel.

Maybe someone more technically minded could create a link to the Wirral Globe's page so people could see the design as I'm not sure how to do this

There's also going to be a number of penguins on New Brighton beach decorated in a weather type theme I think :)

There are 145 in total, all 123 Liverpool ones are concentrated in and around the city centre rather than citywide like Go Superlambananas, 12 will be across the Wirral and 10 in St Helens town centre........my daughter wants me to take her round them all, am all for that as we loved doing the Superlambanana trail!! :)

Funnily enough, I've just been looking online for the trail map, so I can add it to Post #1, Unfortunately I couldn't seem to find it, but if anyone does know where an online version of the trail list is, please PM me the link, so we're ready for the start of the event.

Penguins Go Northwest
19 November 2009

Five penguins from across England’s Northwest gathered at Liverpool Innovation Park today (Thursday 18th November) in preparation for the city’s biggest public art event since Go Superlambananas.

Sponsored by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), the five flightless birds are part of Go Penguins, a winter’s trail of over 100 beautifully created penguins displayed throughout the city as well as Wirral and St Helens.

Each of the Northwest penguins represents a different part of the region and all have been individually designed and painted by professional artists. All five will roost outside the landmark Arena and Convention Centre at Liverpool’s King’s Dock from Sunday 22nd November, where they will be seen by thousands of people.

From nearby Cheshire is the rather unusual Cheshire Cat penguin, based on the character from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and featuring the Cheshire Cat’s trademark grin.

All the way from Cumbria is Peter Waddle, whose inspiration comes from the stories and illustrations of Beatrix Potter and who sports Peter Rabbit’s well-known blue jacket.

Lancashire’s Towering Penguin highlights the delights of Blackpool, both by day and by night, including the world-famous Tower, the world’s biggest mirror ball and the white-knuckle rides of Pleasure Beach.

I am the Walrus is Liverpool’s nod to its most famous foursome. This penguin has morphed into a well-dressed walrus, complete with the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper jacket.

Chris the Cyclist from Manchester stands proudly in his full British Cycling Team kit, complete with helmet. Manchester Velodrome is home to the multi-award winning British Cycling Team and the city hosts a string of world-class sporting events every year.

Peter Mearns, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at the NWDA, said:

“The NWDA is pleased to be able to support Go Penguins. It will no doubt draw thousands of people to Liverpool over the festive period and we hope it will emulate the success of Go Superlambananas. The five penguins from across the region are a great way of highlighting the diversity of the Northwest and I’m sure they will receive a great deal of affection from visitors to the city.”
