Gorakhpur Airport (IATA: GOP, ICAO: VEGK) is an airport located in Gorakhpur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The Airports Authority of India operates it as a civil enclave at the Gorakhpur Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force. From the city the airport is 5 miles (8.0 km). The airport covers an area of 0.71 acres. In June 2017, the Civil Terminal building was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath. It will be expanded in the following months together with a conveyor belt.

: Gorakhpur airport is fast emerging as one of the busiest airports of the state. In terms of number of passengers and flights, it is already fastest growing in north India.
Efforts had been continuing for the development of a civil airport inGorakhpur since mid-80s when Veer Bahadur Singh became the chief minister of the state. He tried hard to get it run on commercial lines, but his efforts did not fructify.

Gorakhpur airport received the highest number of passengers on Tuesday after the lockdown due to Kovid-19 infection. According to airport administration, a total of 2560 passengers came or flew from here. The number of passengers coming from these are 1428 and the number of those going from here is 1132. These include 22 children.

For the first one month when the air service started after the lockdown, the total number of passengers to and from the airport ranged from 200 to 400. But since then the number has been steadily increasing.
At present, there are three flights each to Mumbai - Delhi and one each to Kolkata, Hyderabad, Prayagraj. In view of the rush of passengers in Diwali, an additional aircraft also flew for Delhi for three days. Tuesday was the last day of this service. It is expected that an airline can be extended to Delhi on Chhath again. The three flights coming from Mumbai to Gorakhpur were full.

I question the logic behind starting a thread for UP airports/aviation and then starting multiple threads for small airports like Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Kanpur etc.
Do you actually see any SSCI forum rules being broken in the process? I didn't.

Let people start threads. If others are interested, the threads will continue. Else they'll die out. I think thats fair enough.

As I have mentioned in another thread, Indian carriers have clearly been shifting to new, untapped markets in north india. This has been happening before COVID struck, about the time when Jet Airways began shifting their ATRs out of South India, making way for IndiGo's ATRs.

Consequently, many airports in this region will get operationalised and many people will want to discuss on SSCI. If Chaitanya didn't start a thread, someone else would!

It's kind-of inevitable.

If everything goes well, Gorakhpur may get a gift from the Green Field (having environmental features) airport in the coming days. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, DM K.M. Vijayendra Pandian and CEO Gida Sanjeev Ranjan have been instructed to explore 1500 to 1600 acres of land in Dhuriyapar area. However, it is not yet clear whether the airport will be domestic or international. District administration and officials of GIDA say that only land has been asked to be searched.

The Chief Minister, who arrived in Gorakhpur on a two-day visit on Wednesday, discussed the matter of Green Field Airport during the review of development works in the Annexe Bhavan auditorium. The CM has asked the administration and the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) to find land.

Let us know that recently, GIDA has issued a notification for the acquisition of 5500 acres of land in Dhuriapar. Land will be taken from 18 villages. In such a situation, the search for land for the airport will not be very difficult. Two years ago, the exercise to find land for the international airport started in the district, but the matter cooled down a few days later.

I have always thought that they need to come up with a greenfield airport for Gorakhpur. It is one of those success which never really make the news.

It went from 2 lakh passengers in 2018 to 6 lakh plus passengers in 2019. That is incredible considering Gorakhpur itself isnt that big. That would mean the air service is being used by surrounding areas from even smaller towns. Gorakhpur population itself is not more than 6 lakhs!

Considering UP's population and density many of these smaller airports are growing at rapid speed.

Prayagraj is another example, 1.5 lakh to 4 lakh in a year.

Construction of third terminal at airport will start in new year

Construction of the third terminal at the airport will begin in the new year
Gorakhpur. The construction of the third terminal at Gorakhpur Airport has intensified. It is set to start construction by the middle of the new year. This terminal will be ready in about two years.
With a capacity of 350 passengers, this terminal will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Like the metro stations, there will be automated stairs and a large flower plaza. WiFi connectivity will be available throughout the terminal. There will be comfortable chairs to sit on. There will also be modern toilet facilities for men and women. Two passengers will be able to check in and checkout simultaneously. Preparation for the new terminal was done in early 2020 but due to Corona the process slowed down. Due to the construction of the terminal, the scope of the airport will also increase by about one and a half acres.
Flight preparations for Chennai, Ahmedabad also
In view of increasing facilities and traffic at Gorakhpur Airport, some more airlines have proposed to start flights to cities like Chennai, Surat and Ahmedabad. With the commencement of services to these cities also, Gorakhpur Airport will connect to almost all major cities of the country. There are currently a total of nine flights. There are three each for Mumbai-Delhi and one each for Kolkata, Hyderabad and Prayagraj.
Airport status has also increased as passengers have increased.

The state government is planning to start flying clubs at state airports. There are plans to start flying clubs at almost all the airports in the state. Flying clubs may operate at airports like Varanasi, Lucknow, but introducing new arrangements in Prayagraj, Kanpur and Gorakhpur will not be easy. The flying club has to take permission from the Air Force and the Central Civil Aviation Department.
