Considering these are a quite a large scheme I think it warrants it's own thread.

Phase 1 Approved - Due on site in March

Phase 2 in planning

Looking good and is very encouraging. There's a huge plot of land on the other side of Chatham Street ripe for development too - this will make it more likely.
Great Central | Phase 1&2 | 9fl/6fl | Approved

Hopefully this will kickstart an improvement along Mowbray Street too, which is currently a complete dump
Is this regarded as being in Kelham or Neepsend or some other district?
If it is the start of a new area on the side of that hill it would be good if they started using the "Bridgehouses" name which used to refer to the adjacent Station that would be better in my view.
It is actually the name of the short stretch of road in front of the development anyhow.
You're right it is on the periphery of both. I would say that these days the Kelham Island name has spread as it has gradually become known as more of a district like St. Vincent's than the original 'island' section. I know a lot of people disagree with that, but that is how cities evolve, once a place is known as something it kind of becomes it.

Being cynical here, but aren't the spread of place names into other either, smaller, or less desirable areas a result of developers and estate agents trying to get an extra few grand on rent or the value, rather than some organic phenomenon.

You see it all the time on RightMove, for example. Large parts of Heeley are suddenly now Meersbrook and to a lesser extent, Banner Cross has become either Ecclesall, or Greystones.

I could be wrong, but it seems to be a more top-down approach to change, rather than the people in the city coining these expansions of place names. That said, it can be tricky in certain parts actually defining where one suburb or area, begins and ends.
Youre right that definitely has a lot to do with it. When it comes to places like this which are kind of a no man's land, its kind of helpful that developments force it one way or another so then its less ambiguous i suppose

Looks great, will there be any units for cafes and restaurants etc on the ground floor?

I'd noticed this too. Houses which are clearly in Heeley being listed as Meersbrook on Rightmove. I suppose it makes more sense in Kelham's case though because there's so much dead land around it that needs to be made identifiable to people.

I wonder if there's a place on this site for a thread on the residential property market?
This whole "desirable naming strategy" has been around for as long as we've been naming and selling stuff. For example, Clapham Junction station is "technically" in Battersea, but was named Clapham Junction because nearby Clapham (in the 1860s) was quite middle class and far more desirable than the heavily industrial Battersea, and the company who built the station wanted to attract more affluent customers. Wandsworth Council have been losing their shit over this for years and years, going so far as to put up "Welcome to the Heart of Battersea" signs at the entrance/exit to the station (probably because Clapham is "technically" in neighbouring Lambeth), which just seems a bit silly. Why can't the name just shift to Clapham? Does it really matter?

Same with Kelham Island. I can't really see the harm in it referring to the wider area. If anything, it simplifies the current silly situation we have with so many place names occupying such a small space. Right now the wider area can go by three different names (maybe even five) depending on who you speak to: Shalesmoor, Kelham Island, Neepsend (and maybe even Upperthorpe or Netherthorpe depending on which side of Shalesmoor roundabout you are). You can walk for only 10 minutes and be in all of these places (Infirmary Road Tesco to the Tesco Express on Bridgehouses Roundabout, for example). That's a bit nuts. Kelham Island seems to be the one that's winning out, so why don't we just embrace it as a name for the wider area?

I agree and I think most Sheffielders do refer to the area as Kelham Island. It’s a good name - much better than ‘Little Kelham’ that was being floated about a few months back.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Yes there are a few units at grund level

Wait, what? Little Kelham is the housing development on the old Tyzack Works/Green Lane Works site. When was it being used for the whole area?

I might have got my wires crossed mate - thought I’d read somewhere it was being banded about as a new name for the whole area.
Looking good Kyle! :)

Drove past the back of this today and noticed that all the trees which had been left to grow have been cleared.
