Greek railways - news and discussion

Here you can post questions , info materials and photos regarding greek railways (OSE).

The railway network of Greece was for decades almost abandoned and only recently (last 15 years) things have started to change.

Still it is one of the smallest networks in EU and with the smallest electrified part.

In the next posts i will give some info about new developements and current projects which have as target the total upgrade of the railway services offered...

Perhaps the most scenic rail line in Greece is the rack railway that follows the gorge of the Vouraikos River from Diakofto on the Gulf of Corinth to the mountain town of Kalavrita. The line is 0.75m gauge. The trains are composed of two passenger rail cars with a small rail car between them that houses a diesel generator:







The following is one of the steam engines that used to haul the trains on the Diakofto-Kalavrita line:

The station at Diakofto is also on the meter gauge Peloponnesus line that runs from Athens to Corinth and points west. The following pictures is of a graffiti covered DMU train on the meter gauge line departing Diakofto:



The meter gauge line has a branch that splits off the mainline just before the Corinth Canal and goes to the popular beach resort of Loutraki:

In case you have not heard , here are some news that will finally change the image of "odontotos" (rack railway) of Diakofto-Kalavryta from the next year :

From the official site of STADLER :

The Greek federal railways OSE have ordered 4 new three-part tourist trains for the railway line from Diakofto to Kalavryta on the Peloponnesus from Stadler Bussnang AG. The delivery value of these four rack railcars amounts to 34.8 million CHF. This new generation of vehicles will be delivered in the years 2006/2007.
The existing rolling stock, which is over 40 years old, is to be replaced on the existing, 22.3 km long rack railway in the north of the Peloponnesus. This railway construction has an extremely narrow gauge track of only 750 mm and runs from the scenic coastal town of Diakofto up to the mountainous hiking area of Kalavryta. Diesel traction allows the tourist trains to overcome a difference of 700 m in height over 3 rack sections
. The new, lightweight Stadler rack railcars are built with very low axle loads, tailored to this narrow gauge route, which is unique in the world. The diesel-electric drive is divided into pure rack drives and pure adhesion drives, which exert their share of the traction force in the rack sections as well. The vehicle is precisely adapted to the profile of the low, narrow tunnels between valleys, bridges and wild gorges. The four new Stadler trains provide passengers with a good panoramic view and contain a cooling system. The transport capacity can be increased in comparison to that of the existing trains, which have gotten on in years; the new trains have more seats and can attain faster speeds. For this purpose, the Greek federal railway is renovating the entire railway line.

I remember going to the railway Station in Athens in 1999.There were 2 platforms from memory,about the size of a local station.We were going to catch a train to the north of the country,a train strike put a stop to that.It was a big shock after coming from other Eruopean countries.

Were are the pics of the new Trains athens has? I forgot the name. Anyway heres the beautiful Athens Trams. Also, how bout the Athinai - Korinthos line?

ATHENS LIGHT RAIL



Athens has recently undergone a MAJOR facelift, one that has probarbly not been seen elsewere in Europe in the past 10 years. Most of this has come as a result of the olympic games.

One of the things implimented was the brand new light rail system in athens. The trams are among the most modern in the world. I personally love there modern futuristic appearance as well as the colour scheme.

Facts and Figures:
- Two Light rail lines
- 23.5km of Light rail tracks cover the city.
- 35 Tram cars
- Cost: EUR 125 million
- 4 new tramways proposed giving
the network 4.9km of tramways​

Nick i understand your surprise in 1999. Hopefully some things have changed since then , and if OSE keeps this pace in a few years the major network will be totally upgraded.
Dont forget though what i wrote in my first post , that the railways were abandonded for decades .

Anyway since you mentioned the Athens central railway station , the reason that when you visited athens there were two stations is that the Peloponnese network is still a metric gauge line while the other network is normal gauge .
There is a new project for a construction of a new central railway station.

Here is some info for you and the other forumers (all the info is posted also in the relevant thread in the Hellenic agora- greek forum , under the transportation thread)


New Metropolitan Athens Railway Station
The new design for the Athens central station was made public in July 2004 . The existing 1.500 sq.m. building will be retained as a functional part of the new station after a clean up.

The old metre gauge station will be preserved without serving a functional role, and there will be 11 lines serving the many trains that are expected to call a the new station , covered under a metal cover consisting of 20.000sq.m. of metal constructions that remind inverted pyramids.
The underground level will serve as a shopping district while joining the Metro station with the Deligianni and Konstantinoupoleos streets (10.000 sq.m. area). There’ll be another level (7.800sq.m.) above the passenger level for facilities like restaurants , ticket issuing and entertainment.
The main architectural designs were done by the architectural firm “Meletitiki , Alexandros Tompazis” in cooperations with KLMF architects.
The new station design is an attempt to add a modern landmark in a degraded part of Athens , while solving many practical and aesthetic problems.

Is the new Proastiakos service between Athens and Corinth meter gauge or is it standard gauge?

I had assumed that it would be meter gauge in order to be compatible with the lines beyond Corinth; however, there appears to be lot of new construction involved with the route. I only saw the new construction from a distance but it wouldn't surprise me if the new Proastiakos line is completely separate from the existing meter gauge line.

Greg-Chr. the new proastiakos line is actually just a part of the new line (standard gauge - average/high speed - double track line) between Athens and Patras.

Proastiakos is the company which will operate the trains and the whole project of suburban rail transportation of Athens (in a radius of ~80 Km).

But just for answering your question the new line is completely different from the old metric gauge one.

This of course is an advantage but at the same time it creates a problem in the future for the rest Peloponnesos rail network (the part which will remain metric gauge).

Athens-Corinth suburban railway ( PROASTIAKOS ) line launched

(not completely finished yet , missing electrification )





The suburban railway line linking Athens with Corinth was officially inaugurated and opened to the public on Monday by transport and communications minister .

The route from terminal to terminal takes approximately one hour.

The Athens-Corinth line will run every hour, with the first train departing Corinth for Athens at 8:13 a.m. and for Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport at 7:08 a.m. The last train will depart for Athens at 8:13 p.m., and for the airport at 5:08 p.m.

Conversely, the first train from Athens for Corinth will depart at 6:06 a.m., and the last one at 6:06 p.m., while the first train from the airport for Corinth will depart at 7:05 a.m. and the last one at 7:05 p.m.

The tickets for the Athens-Corinth ( 88 km ) and Corinth-Athens routes will cost six (6) euros, while for the route Corinth-Airport and Airport-Corinth they will cost eight (8) euros.

The intermediate stops along the route, at the initial stage, are Nea Peramos, Megara, Kineta, and Aghioi Theodoroi, while stations at Ano Liossia, Thriassio, Magoula and Zephyri will be added on towards the end of 2006.

Also, a passenger boarding the suburban railway at Corinth may transfer, at the Neratziotissa station, to the ISAP train line or the Athens Metro.

The new Corinth-Athens route covers a total distance of 88 kilometres, with a maximum speed of 200 kilometres per hour.(actually the maximum speed will be no more then 130 km/h because the railbuses dont go faster)

Construction of the line cost 475 million euros, and was carried out by the OSE (Hellenic Railways Organisation) subsidiary ERGOSE.

In the whole Suburban project the following are implemented:

Installation of a modern signaling - telecommanding and telecommunications system. The signaling system ensures bidirectional traffic on both tracks. The system?s management can be carried out both locally by a local workstation and centrally by the new CTC in SKA. In addition, a fiber optic telecommunication backbone network is under construction, appropriate to the railway operation needs. Given that the new high-speed railway line constitutes part of the Trans-European railway networks, all interoperability requirements are complied with. As far as signaling is concerned, this entails the application of the European Train Control System (ΕTCS), constituting part of the overall European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The advanced technology that is used also enables the movement of trains of an older technology, that do not have ETCS rolling stock equipment; thus a light signaling system is also included. As regards railway system safety, all requirements are governed by European Standardization, in order to achieve a high safety level that corresponds to a Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4 in accordance with ΕΝV50129).

Installation of electrification system, consisting of an Overhead Contact System (OCS) of international specifications,that fulfills the Rapid Rail Transit System requirements, and Electrification remote control (SCADA).

Railway stations - stops are equipped with telecommunication and information systems using state-of-the-art technology: Integrated Telecommunication Transport Network (ITTN), Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), Public Address, Emergency Communication and Intercommunication System (PAECIS), Passenger Information System (PIS), and Alarm System. Stations are also equipped with fully remote-controlled electromechanical installations of an advanced technology

Seeing these developments in Greece is fantastic!

I used to visit Greece and feel concerned because the Greek roads, airport, and other infrastructure seemed so inadequate. Now when I visit Greece, I find myself marveling at the new roads, airport, and railways. When I return home, I feel concern that the United States is falling behind.

Is the Athens-Thessaloniki electrification already finished? This project is already far to long overdue. Also, are the electric Desiros already in service?

It is good to see that Greece is investing heavily in it railways, it's fastly catching up with the rest of Europe!

hello Momochan! :)

The electrification is not delivered yet though it is installed in more then 60% of the line Athens-Thessaloniki. (it is missing a difficult mountainous part between domokos and tithorea , in middle mainland greece.)
ERGOSE has announced delivery for 2006.(but we will see then..)
Electric desiros are delivered/under delivery and unfortunatelly they stay in depos because of the lack of completed electrification.

Another important project is the electrification of the final few Kms from SKA-to Athens central station , since this will give the opportunity to use the electric desiros in the whole line from airport to Athens larissis station (now the cables are installed from the airport till SKA ).

By the way and since i mentioned the most difficult part between athens and thessaloniki i should not forget to mention the new railway tunnel under construction there , which is the largest railway tunnel in Greece .

Kallidromon railway tunnel which has a length of 9,200 m.

Athens - Patras new railway line
(partially completed - under construction the section Corinth-Patras)

Some news about this project of very high importance since the railway network of Peloponnese was actually abandoned for many decades.






The new line will replace the current metric gauge single line.
It is designed for speeds of 200 Km/h for the section Athens-Corinth-Lygia
150 Km/h for the section Lygia-Aegion , and 100-150 Km/h for the final section (and the most difficult) Aegion-Patras.
The electrification is designed for speeds up to 250 Km/h.
Completed (March 2007)

Untill now it is completed and in use the section Athens (SKA- Aharcnes Traffic Center) - Corinth (80 Km).

Ready untill JUly 2007

Till the summer will be ready the section Corinth-Kiato (21Km).

Under construction :

The next section (112 km total length) is divided in two parts :

1) Kiato - Aegion (71 Km) is under construction and it will be ready in 2010.The cost of the project is 578 million €

2) Aegion - Patras (41 Km) will be ready in 2013.The cost of the project is 423 million €


The electrification of the section Athens-Corinth-Kiato will be ready in 2009 while the rest part (untill Patras) will be ready in 2013.
