Guatemala City will tender $700m light rail scheme by 2017

A feasibility study into the construction of a 20km light rail system in Guatemala City has put a price tag of $770m on the work. The project will be a single line running north to south with 20 stations between South Centra in Villa Nueva and Centra Norte. The study was carried out by Spanish consulting engineer, IDOM, which is also working on the masterplanning of a 148ha suburb in La Pedrera Quarry. The rail system is one of the 10 investment projects that the government included in its Agencia Nacional de Alianzas para el Desarrollo de Infraestructura Económica (ANADIE) programme, announced in April

Guatemala City has a BRT system called Transmetro, a newer system called Transurbano, and the red buses. There are over 3,000 buses that serve the city on a daily basis. The old, antiquated and dangerous red buses make up the bulk of service. All three have been mirred in corruption and in scandal. Transurbano, meant to replace the red buses, was originally supposed to have 3,100 buses. Instead, it has about 450 buses.

I have heard that the TransMetro system is very good. It has security guards at all the stations and pre-paid boarding. Not only does make the system fast and reliable but also safe for both the drivers and passengers.

Guatemala City had a terrible time due to bus drivers being forced to give over all the fares at knifepoint or being blackmailed into doing so less something "happen" to them or their families. With TransMetro, the bus drivers have no cash as the system is prepaid and the stations are large, well maintained, and safe.

It still has a tough time. Almost all the photos I've taken there have been from inside a car, except when my uncle was able to get permission from Transmetro to take photos at Transmetro's Centra Sur station. Anything else is a risk. I took the red buses back 15-20 years ago, when I was little. But I can't go in with my big Canon EOS60D.

I rode Transurbano once last year. Not much to it, except the bus had two turnstiles: one in the front, and another one in the back. But Transurbano is still risky.
