Gwalior Airport (IATA: GWL, ICAO: VIGR) is a civil enclave airport at the Maharajpur Air Force Station 10 km (6 mi) north-east of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is one of the six airports in Madhya Pradesh and fourth Largest Airport in Madhya Pradesh. The airport is spread over an area of 760 acres (310 hectares). The airport is spread over 760.7 acres (307.8 hectares) and has a single terminal ie. Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Terminal and can handle 350 passengers per hour. The 100m X 150m apron can handle one Airbus A320 and one small aircraft simultaneously. The Gwalior Air Base is the only operational air force base with two operational parallel runways. The second runway was built in February 2009 and became operational in October 2010.

Currently the civil enclave is in dire need of expansion. Two options are being looked over one is building a new integrated terminal by acquiring land from the nearby Potato Research Institute whereas the other one is to build a completely new greenfield airport for Gwalior. Alliance Air, SpiceJet and IndiGo connect Gwalior to most major cities in India.

Cold storage was to be developed by Airport Authority of India in exchange of land for new Terminal Building, Potato research center said - we need farmer rest house

Due to the proposal of the new air terminal, the land of the Central Potato Research Center, which will be taken by the Airport Authority of India, will have to be given in lieu of cold storage. These instructions have been received by the Airport Authority from Delhi and a letter has also been issued in writing. At the same time, after receiving this letter, the Central Potato Research Center has written in response that there is no such need for cold storage to keep the breeder seeds of potatoes. Farmers from all over the country come here, for whom there is no arrangement for their stay. In such a situation, it would be better if a rest house is made and given. Now this demand of the Center is being considered. At the same time, the work of soil testing for the new air terminal has been completed. Now further process is going on.

It is to be known that a new air terminal is being built in Gwalior to expand the airport. For which 130 acres of land of Central Potato Research Center is being taken. NOC has also been issued regarding the land and now the proposal to transfer the land is yet to be passed by the cabinet in Bhopal. Now only after the transfer of the land, further work can be done. At the same time, the team of experts was doing the work of site testing, who had taken soil samples from the cultivated land of Central Potato Research, this work has been completed.

13 acres more in the area, confusion here

In the letter sent to take the land of Potato Research Center from Gwalior, 143 acres was mentioned in it, but what is going on till now is 130 acres. Now how this difference of 13 acres is coming, it is not clear yet. Now it will come out after the land transfer process is done.

The suspension order issued recently by MP Aviation Department Secretary M Selvendran stated that "serious negligence on the part of Captain Majid Akhtar resulted in damage to the plane and loss to the government".

The Madhya Pradesh government had bought the aircraft, a seven-seater Beechcraft King Air B-200GT VT MPQ, from American company 'Textron Aviation' for over Rs 65 crore last year. The order, in Hindi, further said Akhtar was not allowed to leave the headquarters Bhopal without prior permission and that he had been suspended under relevant sections of the Civil Services Rules.
