Gwalior Airport (IATA: GWL, ICAO: VIGR) is a civil enclave airport at the Maharajpur Air Force Station 10 km (6 mi) north-east of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is one of the six airports in Madhya Pradesh and fourth Largest Airport in Madhya Pradesh. The airport is spread over an area of 760 acres (310 hectares). The airport is spread over 760.7 acres (307.8 hectares) and has a single terminal ie. Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Terminal and can handle 350 passengers per hour. The 100m X 150m apron can handle one Airbus A320 and one small aircraft simultaneously. The Gwalior Air Base is the only operational air force base with two operational parallel runways. The second runway was built in February 2009 and became operational in October 2010.

Currently the civil enclave is in dire need of expansion. Two options are being looked over one is building a new integrated terminal by acquiring land from the nearby Potato Research Institute whereas the other one is to build a completely new greenfield airport for Gwalior. Alliance Air, SpiceJet and IndiGo connect Gwalior to most major cities in India.

Gwalior Green Field Airport News: Land seen for new airport, discussion on expanding the existing airport to build a state-of-the-art civil airport

The team of Airport Authority of India (AAI) on Saturday inspected the land for a new airport of international standard in Gwalior. They inspected the land in Lakhanpura, Chhakari village and Sirsa in Ghatigaon. After the inspection, the AAI team held a meeting with Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar and collectors of Gwalior, Bhind, Morena. The possibility of airports in Bhind and Morena has also been explored. It was informed in the meeting that the option of expanding the existing airport into a state-of-the-art civil airport has also been kept.

6 km long land required:

Officials of the Airport Authority of India told in the meeting that for the construction of a new civil airport, land is required for a length of 6 kilometers and a width of one kilometer. Along with this, it will also have to be kept in mind that according to the Airforce Guidelines, this land should be at an adequate aerial distance of about 26 km from the Air Force station. More than 1000 acres of land is required for the new airport.

Gwalior Aircraft Crash Landing: MP Govt Suspends Pilot for 'Serious Negligence'

The Madhya Pradesh government has suspended its senior pilot Majid Akhtar for "serious negligence" that caused the crash landing of an aircraft at Gwalior airport on May 6 this year. The suspension order issued recently by MP Aviation Department Secretary M Selvendran stated that "serious negligence on the part of Captain Majid Akhtar resulted in damage to the plane and loss to the government".

The Madhya Pradesh government had bought the aircraft, a seven-seater Beechcraft King Air B-200GT VT MPQ, from American company 'Textron Aviation' for over Rs 65 crore last year. The order, in Hindi, further said Akhtar was not allowed to leave the headquarters Bhopal without prior permission and that he had been suspended under relevant sections of the Civil Services Rules.
