Halifax has been ranked the second best city to live in Canada just behind Ottawa.

agree totally. the city is very nice despite perceived shortcomings by some locals. The biggest thing as a negative I see is not really knowing the abilities and size of the community.

If the civic officials can organize well then things will further happen to enhance the city and some desire. The problem lies in the disorganized ad hoc way things are gone about .

a stadium will never make a city but the city must create the stadium within to have any meaning.

Not that this is relevant, but just tonight I learned on an American public radio urban affairs podcast (http://www.smartcityradio.com/smartcityradio/) that Halifax was one of only 2 deep water ports on the Atlantic Coast of North America. That alone will insure economic success..

And I've never heard anything but positive thoughts on Halifax. Hope to visit someday.

Unfortunately Halifax is often overlooked as a strategic port. Canadian economic policy is often geared towards developing central Canada not the peripheral regions.
That's not exactly true. BC gets a lot more attention when it comes to port infrastructure than Halifax or even Montreal
Well the Vancouver region isnt exactly a peripheral region. I am more thinking Praires(before oil) and the Atlantic coast.

you are right in your observation about central Canadian development and the port of Halifax . Vancouver's development of there port is tied to the fact that trans pacific shipping far outstrips trans Atlantic shipping. It is the point now with capacity that Prince Rupert BC is having a major development of their port because Vancouver is in the same situation as American Ports.

China is the driving force to the point that the Chinese are now involved in a container terminal to off load post panamax ships in Panama for rail transport across that county to waiting container ships to then ship to ports on the gulf coast and the eastern sea board of the united states.

New ventures in regards to Panama and expansion of the Panama canal are coming from chinese need to access the Us market anyways possible.

The Picture is not bleak for the port of halifax by any means simply because the depths of most US harbours require expense dredging for these massive ships. halifax and nova scotia will probably be complimented by the development of nova scotias second deep water port the strait of canso.

a container terminal is in the works there that will have more acreage then both container terminals in the port of halifax combined.

Me and my boyfriend are going to visit Halifax this July for a few days.
mainly for a trip but my boyfriend is seriously considering moving to Halifax even though he's bever been there.

we are going to take a good look at Halifax but I'm sure a few days won't be enough to judge if we should move or not.

where do you think we can find good infos about living in Halifax?
such as running a small business, life style, people, type of jobs...
my boyfriend wants to open a motorcycle shop or performance shop for dressed up cars.
is there any shops like that in Halifax we can visit?

I can't wait to visit Halifax in July. we are going to eat so much seafood!!
and walk on REAL beach! not like this beach by factories in Toronto. :eek:hno:

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for but here's a few sites that may be helpful.

As for motorcycle shop or performance shop for dressed up cars I'm not really into that sort of thing...there a few shops like that around not sure where they are but I could see a shop like that doing quite well here.

I know most of the bike shops are out in the business parks - Bayers Lake, Burnside and out by the airport. There's a performace/detailing place on Chebucto Rd. but it's the only one I can think of off the top of my head
And in terms of lifestyle/people, I always say that it's really liberal, but more like New England than San Francisco - liberal, but not very radical. Very "live and let live" and laid-back.
Thank you for the websites! :eek:kay:
http://www.greaterhalifax.com is a great site to get some ideas about Halifax.

and we will check out the bike and performance shops if we can find during our trip. :)

thx guys!

My Halifax trip is just 1 month away!
me and my boyfriend still dont know what we gonna do yet..
I only know there'll be the Tall Ship festival. must be interesting!
should I buy the ticket to get inside the ships?
and definately will go to beach.
since I work for Canada Post, it'd fun to visit the post office in Peggy's Cove.

but oh man,,, we are so anxious to try so many restaurants in Halifax.
probably we'll spend most our budget on food! :colgate:

so,, I need to ask you people in Halifax;
What's your favorite restaurant?
where would you recommend?
we are looking for casual dinings. like home style food.
and fish and chips, sushi, all day breakfast, dessert cafe....

please help me out so I can experience Halifax's great food! :eek:kay:
thanks a bunch!

Curry Village (just off South Park St) is an AMAZING Indian restaurant, I've heard Hamachi House and Dharma Sushi are pretty good, although I don't eat sushi much myself. There are a few good Greek and Lebanese restaurants on Quinpool Rd and I think the Spartan also serves all-day breakfast.. of course there's Cora's too for that. Quinpool is probably your best all-around bet in terms of food, the Economy Shoe Shop on Argyle St is really good too.. and a few other places around Argyle. I'd recommend trying to get on one or two of the tall ships, also check out the Tattoo if you are here for the first week of July

I also like Il Mercato and Anatolia.

Quinpool is a good place for cheaper food (Greek, Chinese, stuff like pizza, fish and chips..).

Has anybody been to Mezza? I guess it's mostly Lebanese (cheap Lebanese food can be found in many pizza places)?
The Med on Barrington St. is pretty good too.
Very interesting, thanx
