Hanoi to have streets named after 36 capitals

source: SGGP

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung recently asked Hanoi People’s Committee to research the possibility of establishing a new quarter, including 36 new streets named after various national capitals from around the world.

Each street will have architectural features of each country that it is named for that country's capital.

To Anh Tuan, director of the Hanoi’s Department of Planning and Architecture, said establishing a new quarter with the names of capitols needs precautions and base decisions on diplomatic and economic relations between Vietnam and other countries.

Hanoi is widely known for its old quarter, often referred to as the 36 old streets, which covers 100 hectares in Hoan Kiem District – the capitol’s center.

Last year, the Government approved a plan to expand Hanoi.

The whole of Red River Delta Province of Ha Tay which is was merged into Hanoi.

Some districts form northern provinces of Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh were also added to the capitall’s territory.

Once the project is completed, Hanoi will cover 334,470 hectares and have a population of around 6.2 million people. The resolution was put into effect on August 1, 2008.

The Government Office’s Chairman Nguyen Xuan Phuc has issued a memo from the Prime Minister assigning the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee to consider Tieu Diem Co. Ltd’s proposal that Hanoi’s 36 new streets bear the names of foreign capitals.

It was agreed between Hanoi and its 36 sister capitals around the world that Hanoi and the symbol of the One-pillar Pagoda will be placed in these foreign capitals to promote Vietnam image to the international community.
The project will be part of the celebration of Thang Long-Hanoi’s 1,000th anniversary.
what do you guys think of this idea? what do you guys want to have to represent your country?

A city having its streets named after several capital cities? That's original, unless there are other cities with that feature. t is unknown what area in Hanoi will have those 36 streets.

Ha Noi ponders naming streets after world capitals

source: VietNamNet

VietNamNet Bridge – Walking through the Red Square in Moscow or visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris is only a dream for many Vietnamese people.

But now these dreams may come true in a way without them leaving home, if a project to form 36 new streets with the traits and names of 36 of the world's capitals is realised.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the Ha Noi's People's Committee to consider and study the idea, which was proposed by the Tieu Diem Communications Company.

Nguyen Thien, director of the company, said that coupled with the 36 ancient streets, the capital would have a new attraction, with 36 new streets showing the architectural and cultural features of capitals across the world.

For example, Berlin Street would be designed with the Brandenburg Gate and snowbell trees, while Amsterdam Street would have tulip gardens, said Thien.

This would be a cultural project to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi, and would also be evidence that the country had integrated into the world, he added.

Ha Noi could make plans with these capitals to have their names here, said Thien.

But the idea will only be successful and profitable if it can drum up interest from the tourism industry and relevant enterprises.

The Urban Development Department under the Ministry of Construction sent a message praising the idea, and suggested a working meeting with the company on the subject.

Difficult task

Nguyen Duc Hoa, deputy director of Ha Noi's Culture, Sports and Tourism Department, said that relevant authorities needed time to study the idea, and that it would not be a simple task, as when new streets were added to districts, they already had designs and architecture in place.

Only afterwards were legal procedures made to name the streets. So, if the idea was implemented, it would be necessary to put aside land, said Hoa.

Dao Ngoc Nghiem, an architecture, said that a really large space would be needed to build these streets.

It would be too difficult, said Nghiem.

"There were many reasons for the city to choose only 36 capitals in the world, but Ha Noi had great relationships with many more," he said.

Many well-known heroes, scientists and writers who have contributed to the building of the country have yet to have streets named after them, so authorities should pay attention to them instead of these unreal ideas, said Le Van Noi, a Hanoian.

The capital will also have to consider whether to name the streets in Vietnamese, or in the language of their own countries.

It's not only about to name a street after a capital city, but to bring the architecture and culture of that foreign country into the street as well. It's like an ethnic quarter (Little India, Chinatown...) limited to a street.

Will there be an Ottawa street with fake igloos (due to the heat) and lots of people wearing plaid?

Man Ive had that idea in my head for years, I can't belive somewhere is doing it.

I always wanted it in my hometown, London, but not disney-eque, and the streets gathered round like the spokes on a wheel.

they wouldn't use Washington D.C. would they?! That would be like naming a street in Washington D.C. Pyongyang or Tehran St.
but Bagdad for sure. It was mentioned in one of the other article in Vietnamese. I hope it wont turn out tacky. It should be still authentic. They shouldnt make it too obvious-looking. Its more about to recreate the atmosphere of the foreign country in Hanoi, not to rebuild this and that landmark in a smaller version. Las Vegas and Sineyland do it already.

That' s good. We have lots of Vietnamese districts in the US named "Little Saigon", the largest California, in Orange County & in San Jose. Although in some places there's been some political controversey about the names.

Naming streets after foreign cities is not unusual in europe. What's unusual is the plan to design the street in a way which resembles the respective city.

Some street names in Hamburg:
- Sydneystrasse
- New-York-Ring
- Singapurweg (Singapore)
- Singapurstrasse (Singapore)
- Manilaweg
- Caracasweg
- Limaweg
- Dakarweg
- Kapstadtring (Cape Town)
- Halifaxweg
- Shanghaiallee
- Hongkongstrasse
- Osakaallee
- Tokiostrasse (Tokyo)
- San-Francisco-Strasse
- Chicagokai
- New-Orleans-Straße

Not to speak of all the streets named after german towns. There is even a whole area with streets named after districts from Berlin.
