History of this photo?

What year, time of day and season do you think this photo was taken and why?
I'm trying to get an accurate history of the photo. I personally think it was taken around midday, due to shadows on some buildings facing north? And also probably near Spring since some trees are starting to get green? I'm not to sure on the year though, a few redevelopments, especially Melb Uni's new law building. What are your opinions on these three questions?
This website has an even bigger scale of it http://www.sli.unimelb.edu.au/research/mers/Downloads/Image-1-Melb-Uni.jpg

the tag on bottom left cnr says March 1964.
great photo
This pic is much later than 1964. It was taken from above North Melbourne looking east across Melbourne University and Carlton. The Melbourne Cemetery is mid pic, left. In the far distance you can see the eastern Freeway...The Gardens right edge are the Carlton Gardens behind the Royal Exhibition Building..the vacant land area was the car park where Melbourne Museum is now. In the centre of the roundabout at the top of Elizabeth St where Flemington Rd and Royal Parade join you can see the flagpole erected for Melbournes 150th. Birthday....My estimate is maybe ??? late 80's early 90's?
really? unless tag says march 1984?
some of landmarks that i know some history on is- the RMH has a chimney. this was demolished in 94.
so its before 90;s maybe it does say march84?
Im trying to make out the year as well  I can see the march bit, which means it was in Spring. ~1984 seems about right, any other ideas?
The dark building behind - this side - of what was the Old Melbourne Motor Inn I think wasnt built till early '90's??? so I'll re estimate .....1993, 12th. february at 1.42 pm.
The caption definitely says March. In this part of the world that means Autumn, not Spring.

Going by what Cullwulla says about the chimney, it would be at least a few years prior to 1994. The Eastern freeway appears to have traffic on it which means the photo is from after it opened. This implies the picture was taken sometime between 1978 and 1994.

Cul, that picture also shows a chimney at RWH. Do you know if this is still standing or the date it would have been demolished? I'm not sure but the flagpole may have been built for the Bicentenary in 1988 which would narrow the exact date even further.
The grass up the centre of the Eastern Fwy looks dry??? so maybe summer ..not autumn or spring

The photo has a caption that says MArch. Pretty much puts the month beyond dispute. It's the year that't hard to read. As for grass, yeah i noticed the brown. But I think it could be the freeway still being new that the grass wasn't yet planted or grown or something.

that stack was built in 1970 and was pulled down only a couple of years ago.
Which one is it ?
The new Walter and Eliza Hall Institute building shown in this aerial was completed in 1985, and the Flag at the Haymarket roundabout was completed in 1984 for Melbourne's Sesquicentenary, my guess is that it was taken in march 1985 or 1986.

One of the terraces opposite the bowls club which is now University Square.

The Old Melbourne was built before the early 1980s - I used to frequent the disco there in the 1980s.

It is before the new YHA was built which was about 1990 - so between 1985 and 1990 - say March 1988
hey I said the building behind the Old Melbourne !!!
Not hijacking this thread ??? but I took these two pics and know the day they were taken so anyone have any ideas ??? and can you work out where they were taken from......hope this is ok...similar idea...so please follow original thread pic by all means. :)

First photo taken from Block 2 of the Commonwealth Centre and the second from the Reserve Bank Building.

Dates: Not sure maybe 1971 May or August judging by the lowish sun.
Yeah daffy...both correct...the top one was taken on a monday....5th. April 1971...just finished my lunch. The one from the reserve bank was in June '71was up in their canteen, its got a small open balcony around the top....took the pic then some guys came up to me and said hey this building is not open to spectators..so I was evicted..yet again!!!
