I passed by Chengdu on the way to Sichuan's glaciers last December. The city was bustling with construction and a nasty coat of smog covered the skies.
This is panda-land. You already see signs at the airport.
The panda sanctuary in the outskirts is more like a zoo with pandas only. They're fun to watch but costs a fortune to actually hold one for a photo-op.
You can still see "old Chengdu", which has been rebuilt and turned into a commercialized shopping area. Not really authentic indeed.
