Very nice photos. What a contrast between the rowhouses of yesteryear and today's skyscraper jungle.
That's just amazing! Thank you
The server has problems! The pics are soon again visible.
Very nice ! And how time flies ......
What a difference 50 years can make on a city! WOW!

There was like almost no skyscrapers in hong kong back in the fifties... and just look now.... :eek2:
omg... the land area even looks smaller.
And what happened to the trees on the hills?
What a transformation!!!!

I can't but hate the builders of the 50's in HK as they're the ones responsible for all those run-down looking gritty old buildings that make Hong Kong really really ugly despite the fact people say its part of HK's character...
wow. no offense to anyone but back then, shanghai was on a totally different calibur than hong kong. hong kong was nowhere near as grand and developed as shanghai was. its a shame how its the other way around now...
Amazing pictures~~~~
Love to see what have changed in half a century of HK.
I'll try to point out the locations in the pictures.

Looking east towards Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. The empty land at the top should be present day Victoria Park

Not 100% sure, but guessing it's So Kon Po, present day Hong Kong Stadium area.

Looking west towards Admiralty with Tamer Site on the left.

Happy Valley. Racecourse is on the left/

Wan Chai street scene. The blue sign says "Hennessy Road Government Primary School," the school is still in operation today. But not sure it's Hennessy Road side or Thomson Road side though.

Aberdeen from Ap Lei Chau looking towards the Fish Market and the Chinese Permanent Cemetry.

Wu Nam Street, Aberdeen. The area has become Aberdeen Bus Terminus today. The red brick building in the back on the hill is the old Marine Police Base, today Ware House.

Aberdeen waterfront from Ap Lei Chau. The longitudal road is present day Aberdeen Main Road. You can see Tin Hau Temple all the way in the back.

Today Ap Lei Chau Main Street from Aberdeen. The building on the right of the square white building in the middle is Hung Sing Temple, it is still there today.

The population must have exploded. Not to mention acres of reclaimed land that has added a large portion of landmass to that which is depicted in the old shots.

Total population in 1949 was 1.50 million; it increased to 2.25 in 1953 and reached 2.99 at 1961.
When did the skyscraper boom really start?
