I thought I would start a thread for Houston's light rail system. The current Red Line is about 7.5 miles long and is one of the busiest light rail lines in the US. It is currently undergoing an expansion with the Red Line extension now scheduled for completion in the fall of 2013 along with the Green Line in 2014.

Why does Houston have a light rail? I think that city is too big for a light rail and should have a proper metro/subway

I think its because even though Houston has large pop, the city area is very large and people are thus, spread out, and not crowded in one spot. Thus, subways would be too expensive and not worth time and inconvenience to build.

The city basically had to pay everything out of pocket since a certain group of politicians (including former mayor Bob Lanier and disgraced congressman Tom Delay) blocked any federal funding for the construction of Houston's light rail system.

A map of suggested rail stations for the US 290 Commuter Rail Proposal now under consideration along with a commuter rail line to Sugar Land and Galveston.

Great looking system! Everything about it looks just awesome and modern. But the best part is the fountain! This is purely amazing :drool:

Yeah, I agree with both of you, that is just fucking awesome, a true feat of engineering and design if I say so myself. The Little Monster* here has been a success despite being such a short line, and having to go through hell to get built in the first place, here's to the success of METRO solutions!!!

*I call it the Little Monster because the line has higher ridership per mile than any other Light Rail system (Though Houston's Line is more like Tram than Light Rail) with the exception of Boston's Green Line. (Boston has about 8,600 riders per mile (13,800 per km) and Houston has about 4,600 riders per mile (7,400 per km )).

And those Siemens S70 Avanto's are just so fucking sexy.

Glad you guys seem to like the system. Most visitors complain about the lack of public transportation (which is true but they seem to ignore the rapid expansion plans that are taking place at the moment.)

Light rail is more expensive though. Also one question: does this system go underground at all? Are there plans for it to go underground?

I read something about Houston's water table being too low for underground construction.

What are you talking about? Light Rail tends to be cheaper than Heavy Rail since Heavy Rail has to be entirely grade separated. One of the reasons why the city could afford to build it was because it was using the streets instead of it's own ROW.

And anyways building a subway here is a bad idea given the combinations of clay soil, high ground water level, and the fact that a large percentage of the city sits on a floodplain.
