Great pictures, but why does downtown Houston look so deteriorating and boring?
wow, great pics, I didn't know it was so good

I agree.
Wow, amazing pictures! I especially like the first one. It looks HUGE. Houston looks better and better everytime I see it.

I agree. I always look at threads of Houston, look on Google Earth and the Panoramio photos on there of different areas of the city, yet I can't find it in my heart to like it. It just strikes me as overly clinical (but very pretty) in some areas, road dominated in others and run down in the rest.

Great shots LSyd, pity about what you had to work with!
DT Houston reminds me a lot of DT Jacksonville (only 10x the size), a big contrast of old and new, rich and poor.
image of power
I love Texas
Theres nothing really special about it. But i like the collection of buildings.

Do you guys think the newer, modern glass buildings look boring and deteriorated too?

Read what I said again. I find the city falls into those three camps detailed by myself:

#1. Clinical but pretty (that includes those glassy blocks). I'm not a fan of huge boxy glass anyway at the best of times though.

#2. Roads roads roads - I hate looking at huge motorway flyovers and interchanges.

#3. Run down.

Nope, never did say that those buildings were boring smartie boy.

I was talking about the streets and livelihood of downtown. It's quiet, and a lot of the buildings are run down as you can see in the pictures.
dear poo-poo naysayers, please don't use this thread as a vehicle to voice your opinion in an attempt to try and sound smart or bash another city or boost your own. case in point:

Theres nothing really special about it. But i like the collection of buildings.
thankfully, we've avoided the ever annoying "i don't like american cities" moron.

actually, i thought the streets were lively, especially late at night. however, i was out to enjoy the town that late, not take pics.

everybody else, thanks.

svart, one of the things i like about Houston (and Dallas, and Atlanta) is how on one block you do find overly clinical archticture; you go another block or two and you find "grit," or something totally different (what you refer to as "run-down.") i really like that variety. plus there skyline's great. Houston really needs the 2nd light rail line to be built.

I agree the skyline does look good as a cluster, there aren't many better in the world simply due to the topography and photo opportunities. The comparitively flat landscape assists Houston in the same way it assists a city rather closer to me as it is easy to take a great picture of the Melbourne skyline because it is so flat out North!

I guess the contrast aspect is a personal preference, and perhaps I was a bit harsh in saying "run-down" and "grit" is perhaps a more appropriate term.

Since you've mentioned the light rail, I have to say that Houston has one of the best looking light rail lines that I've ever seen. The point at which it runs through that water feature is quite something! Anyway, keep snapping please, I really enjoyed what your work in Britain and I can't wait to see more shots!
That second balcony railing is falling off!

Downtown Houston is dead because Houston is a suburb with skyscrapers and not a city.
Want to see crowds there? Go to a barbeque or a megachurch.

Houston can be a lot of fun. Depends where you go. Montrose is fun especially if you are a pickle kisser like myself.

For a city the size of Houston its rather pathetic that downtown is a ghost town.

:eek:hno:

i should've expected no less from you, or other "uber-urban elitists"...

anyway, downtown Houston was alive and well while i was there. to say there were tons more people out and about than when i was last there (December) is an understatement. midtown's active as well...downtown doesn't _have_ to be a center of activity other than business (i'd almost prefer it not to be so a city gets nice areas besides the commercial district.) anyway...

1. I agree that there are plenty of idiots who bash every American city for that fact without looking at it's qualities, but you don't sound so great by addressing him that way.

2. Thanks for the info. I've never been to Houston and unfortunately have never heard great things about it. It does have a wonderful skyline, but the downtown, judging from pictures seems to be very quiet without a lot going on.
