1995 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  theDirector
Hi guys,
im relocating from Manhattan to Brickell Ave.
I would like to know how is life there around?
Im 32 years old male. Not so much interested into night life (clubs)
Would like to know what you like about living on Brickell Ave and what not.
What is the biggest difference between Manhatttan and Downtown Miami (for those who lived in NYC)

Thank you!

Brickell Avenue is probably the street in downtown Miami with the most nightlife and action, simply because it's the center for most of the financial centers and condos, which are all within 3-4 blocks of Brickell Avenue (for the area south of the Miami River).

I will not go into comparing anything to New York, because as you may have seen there are some people here who go ballistic when that comparison is made. I have been to New York a lot but never lived there anyways, so I wouldn't be qualified to give you that comparison.

I was born and raised here in Miami. I love it here. However, it is not what you're used to in Manhattan. I've been there a couple of times. And other major cities as well. Miami is not a metropolis as much as people would like it to be. Including myself. Downtown there are only a few places you can walk to, to get something to eat at night. During the day it is great. But at night, not much. Things downtown right now are not 24/7 as in NYC. Slim pickings. I have a cousin that is from Manhattan and moved down here to Brickell Key and he wants to move back. Not that he doesn't like it here it's however, a different atmosphere than what he is used to and probably what you are used to. With that being said I've probably gave a very unbiased description of Downtown Miami. Some people will argue with what I've said but this is the way it is. Miami is not yet a metropolis and has a long way to go.

Well, the one thing you won't find in miami as much as nyc are fellow bosnians. If you don't eat late then all is well because brickell at night is dead. During the day there are nice places where you could walk to eat, and there are a handfull of cafes and restaurants that can do the trick (specially if you like good ol' latin food). They're Not many at this instant, but in the coming months that will change. It can get expensive in some so beware. Bricks night club is a good option if you ever do want to club, so overall I would say that for normal life brickell is pretty cool. Specially if you're going to end up living at plaza on brickell. You will have good options walking distance, particulary by the time plaza opens. Overall, brickell has a nice office mature feel but without the clutter of nyc. You can even take walks to and around brickell key on evenings to stay fit if you miss central park, just replace lush landscaping with a nice ocean breeze.

On Brickell Ave, you'll pretty much be close to almost everything you'd want to be here. However, if you don't know how to drive, you probably need to learn. Hopefully someday cars won't be so necessary here; but that day is not today. Good public transportation is probably what you'll miss most about NYC.

Keep in mind though if you live in a prominent area like Brickell, it's only a matter of time before someone here calls your home "hideous." ;)

I believe you will find Brickell to be very quiet after work hours. Once the office buildings close, that area clears out. Before I moved to Miami, I stayed in the Conrad during all my business trips and there wasnt much to do in that area. However, its still a very nice area of downtown. Which tower are you moving in to?

LoveMiami,

One thing you might want to consider doing is thinking about what you like or don't like about Manhattan, and then maybe we could give you a better idea of how Brickell stacks up. There are enough New Yorkers that have transplanted themselves down here and love it here to say the move can be done. At the same time, as other forumers have mentioned, and I have seen from previous experience, there are just some people that for them, New York is it, and no other place can compare.
One thing that I think a lot of Brickell residents enjoy is that they feel like they're in the middle of something big. Brickell is the place to be right now, and it's no surprise that that is appealing to a lot of New Yorkers and Miamians alike. That said, Brickell is still coming into its own, so naturally it doesn't have the amenities yet, nor may it ever, that you would be accustomed to in Manhattan.

I often wonder how long that will stay true. Once these condos fill up, the Mary Brickell village shopping area might turn into the newest little chic shopping area. It's already getting packed every weekday for lunch with the office crowd. And it's only a matter of time before the nightlife in the area kick in. It just needs a few giant condo's full of people nearby... Oh looky here giant condos right on que! :)

Question is, will it take 3 months or 3 years. But it will happen eventually.
