A free medical center established for the homeless

There are thousands of homeless individuals in the capital Addis Ababa alone. Since these homeless citizens couldn’t get any kind of medical help they are prone to various kinds of illnesses.

To solve this problem and to give a free medical service to the homeless a project is launched in all the city’s ten sub cities.

This free medical service which has started three months ago is being supported by 200, 000 dollars foreign financial aid. The medical service is being given in all the public health clinics of Addis Ababa’s ten sub cities and selected areas where lots of homeless are located.

Check Out These Amazing Towers In Ethiopia That Harvest Clean Water From Thin Air

It’s one of the most precious resources on Earth, but its importance seems forgotten in the western world where its ease of access is often instantaneous. But for 768 million people worldwide, it’s a daily struggle to find safe water, and in result, 1,400 children under the age of five die from water-based diseases every day.

Inspired to offer solution to this issue in a creative way, designer Arturo Vittori invented stunning water towers that can harvest atmospheric water vapor from the air. The nearly 30-foot tall WarkaWater towers can collect over 25 gallons of portable water per day, and are comprised of two sections. The first is a semi-rigid exoskeleton built by tying stalks of juncus or bamboo together; the second, an internal plastic mesh similar to the bags oranges are packed in. The nylon and polypropylene fibers act as a scaffold for condensation, and once droplets of dew form, are funneled by the mesh into a basin at the base of the structure.

The crisis of water shortage caught Vittori’s attention while traveling through Ethiopia. “There, people live in a beautiful natural environment but often without running water, electricity, a toilet, or a shower,” he says. It’s common for women and children to walk miles to worm-filled ponds which are contaminated with human waste. There, they collect water in trashed plastic containers or dried gourds, then carry the heavy load on treacherous roads back to their homes. This is a process which takes hours and endangers the children by exposing them to dangerous illnesses. It also takes them away from school – ensuring that a cycle of poverty repeats.
Hence, the creation of “WarkaWater”. Vittori shared, “[this] is designed to provide clean water as well as ensure long-term environmental, financial, and social sustainability. Once locals have the necessary know how, they will be able to teach other villages and communities to build the WarkaWater towers.” Each tower costs approximately $550 and can be built in under a week with a four-person team and locally available materials.

Digging a well might seem a more obvious solution, but that requires drilling 1,500 feet into Ethiopia’s rocky plateaus, and can be very expensive. After a well is dug, pumps and a reliable electrical connection must also be maintained – making it an unlikely proposition.

How did such an invention come to exist? Vittori was inspired by the giant, gravity-defying, and dome-shaped Warka tree which is native to Ethiopia, sprouts figs, and is used as a community gathering space. “To make people independent, especially in such a rural context it’s synonymous of a sustainable project and guaranties the longevity,” says Vittori. “Using natural fibers helps the tower to be integrated with the landscape both visually with the natural context as well as with local traditional techniques.”

Without a doubt the design is beautiful, inspiring, and an intelligent way to wick moisture from the atmosphere to lessen the burden women and children are often subject to while striving to attain water.

Though the final product is handcrafted, Vittori has used the same parametric modeling skills honed working on aircraft interiors and solar powered cars to create a solution that is safe and stunning.

The finished design is a 88-pound sculpture, 26-feet wide at its broadest point, and just a few feet at its narrowest. It seems the two-year period of perfecting the design was worth the wait. But it continues to be improved, as Vittori and the team have tested this design in multiple locations, and continue to work on improvements that increase the frame’s stability while simultaneously making it easy for villagers to clean the internal mesh.

With such a design ready for action, their hope is to have two WarkaWater towers errected in Ethipioa by 2015. The team and world-wide supports believe this is possible.

Ethiopia registers impressive growth in human dev’t

Addis Ababa, 26 July 2014 (WIC) - Ethiopia has achieved the fastest growth in human development between 2000 and 2013 from among Sub-Saharan Africa, according to UNDP’s 2014 Human Development Report (HDR).

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) 2014 HDR Report was launched on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Hilton Addis.

According to the report, in the years between 2000 and 2013 Ethiopia’s Human Development Index (HDI) value increased by over fifty percent and the country progressed in all the three dimensions of (HDI), namely education, life expectancy and income.

The life expectancy of the country at birth increased by nearly 20 years and expected years of schooling increased by 5.3 years between 1980 and 2013 and its Gross National Income (GNI) per capital grew by over 100 percent between 1990 and 2013, the report added.

The report also pointed out challenges with which it said practitioners in Ethiopia would be familiar. These relate to inequalities, high rate of multi-dimensional poverty and gender equality.

“This year, Ethiopia ranks 173 out of 187 countries. But, as all of us who work here do know, this rank does not tell the full picture of the tremendous human development gains which the country has recorded over the last 15 years,” UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Eugene Owusu said.

Minister of Environment and Forestry, Belete Tafere, on his part said Ethiopia has been doing tremendous efforts to eliminate the vulnerabilities of human development by formulating its

Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy (CRGT) and the country is implementing development plans emanating from it to protect it from the adverse effects of climate change.

He also indicated that “Ethiopia is geographically situated in Horn of Africa, a region that experiences severe weather-related shocks such as droughts, foods and other forms of weather variability that keep intensifying with climate change. The region also suffers from violent conflicts, which may not be related to climate change... The theme of the 2014 Human

Development Report is thus relevant to us because it responds to the need to minimize the vulnerabilities that are often felt in our part of Africa.”

The theme of this year’s report is “Sustaining Human Progress: Reducing Vulnerabilities and Building resilience.”

The government of Ethiopia has been proactively engaged in disaster prevention and preparedness program like Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) would enable to building resilience to various shocks and reducing vulnerabilities, he stated.

The report, according to minister, will contribute to policy discourse in Ethiopia and across the African region as well as throughout the rest of the developing world. (ENA)

Somalis are trying to out f the rest! Seriously though, that region needs to invest in family planning. Those rates are not sustainable, and I don't think it's much better in other regions (countryside).

your comments are truly naive and offensive.

"poor people suck"
'' the Singaporeans have like 1.2 kids"

Is this something new to you?

try to move out from your comfortable couch somewhere in America, and please stop insulting those who don't have your standard of life.
reading your comments, it looks like they are poor on purpose...
you should be happy that your parents brought you to America, so you dont have to experience their conditions.

If Ethiopia is so vibrant, why are young people leaving?

The latest tragedies may have temporarily united Ethiopians but has raised doubts about the country’s economic miracle

by Hassen Hussein @HusseinHxhuss10

Within a week, Ethiopians were hit with a quadruple whammy. On April 19, the Libyan branch of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) released a shocking video purporting to show the killings and beheadings of Ethiopian Christians attempting to cross to Europe through Libya. This came only days after an anti-immigrant mob in South Africa killed at least three Ethiopian immigrants and wounded many others. Al Jazeera America reported that thousands of Ethiopian nationals were stranded in war-torn Yemen. And in the town of Robe in Oromia and its surroundings alone, scores of people were reportedly grieving over the loss of family members at sea aboard a fateful Europe-bound boat that sank April 19 off the coast of Libya with close to 900 aboard.

These tragedies may have temporarily united Ethiopians of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. But they have also raised questions about what kind of desperation drove these migrants to leave their country and risk journeys through sun-scorched deserts and via chancy boats.

The crisis comes at a time when Ethiopia’s economic transformation in the last decade is being hailed as nothing short of a miracle, with some comparing it to the feat achieved by the Asian “tigers” in the 1970s. Why would thousands of young men and women flee their country, whose economy is the fastest growing in Africa and whose democracy is supposedly blossoming? And when will the exodus end?

After the spate of sad news, government spokesman Redwan Hussein said the tragedy “will be a warning to people who wish to risk and travel to Europe through the dangerous route.” Warned or not, many youths simply do not see their dreams for a better life realized in Ethiopia. Observers cite massive poverty, rising costs of living, fast-climbing youth unemployment, lack of economic opportunities for the less politically connected, the economy’s overreliance on the service sector and the requirement of party membership as a condition for employment as the drivers behind the exodus.

A 2012 study by the London-based International Growth Center noted (PDF) widespread urban unemployment amid growing youth landlessness and insignificant job creation in rural areas. “There have been significant increases in educational attainment. However, there has not been as much job creation to provide employment opportunities to the newly educated job seekers,” the report said.

One of the few ISIL victims identified thus far was expelled from Saudi Arabia in 2013. (Saudi deported more than 100,000 Ethiopian domestic workers during a visa crackdown.) A friend, who worked as a technician for the state-run Ethiopian Electricity Agency, joined him on this fateful trek to Libya. At least a handful of the victims who have been identified thus far were said to be college graduates.

Given the depth of poverty, Ethiopia’s much-celebrated economic growth is nowhere close to accommodating the country’s young and expanding population, one of the largest youth cohorts in Africa. Government remains the main employer in Ethiopia after agriculture and commerce. However, as Human Rights Watch noted in 2011, “access to seeds, fertilizers, tools and loans … public sector jobs, educational opportunities and even food assistance” is often contingent on support for the ruling party.

Still, unemployment and lack of economic opportunities are not the only reasons for the excessive outward migration. These conditions are compounded by the fact that youths, ever more censored and denied access to the Internet and alternative sources of information, simply do not trust the government enough to heed Hussein’s warnings. Furthermore, the vast majority of Ethiopian migrants are political refugees fleeing persecution. There are nearly 7,000 registered Ethiopian refugees in Yemen, Kenya has more than 20,000, and Egypt and Somalia have nearly 3,000 each, according to the United Nations refugee agency [...]

As long as Ethiopia focuses on security, the door is left wide open for further exodus and potential social unrest from an increasingly despondent populace.

your comments are truly naive and offensive.
