The did a study in a very small town in Suffolk about that exact thing. Tescos got refused planning permission because of the perceived effect on the local high streets so in the years since they have made various studies of it. Though some shops still struggle as a lot of people do drive to Ipswich for supermarkets all the shops that closed were replaced and more have opened up and they basically decided that the planning decision as right for the high street though loads of locals are still grumbling about 'being forced' to drive to Ipswich and Tescos is trying again, dam them!

Excuse my language, but Tesco can **** right off...they are greedy and unsympathetic to local life...there's been a rather large one in East Didsbury for about 10 years now, and this June, an even bigger one has opened about half a mile away in Burnage...there is just no need for it.

5 years ago in Preston, there were just two Tesco's... a metro in the city centre and the superstore at Chorley. Since then, the metro in the centre closed down, the huge new Tesco Extra store opened in what was Leyland town centre, last year they opened metro stores in Ribbleton and Longsands, and this year they have opened Express stores in Moss Side and Ashton-on-Ribble. Next year they are going to open a metro store in town (again!) and then build a huge Extra store at Cottam!
Bloody Tesco...
