Milwaukee will probably be used a lot, but never the skyline- at least not until it has a few more tall buildings up.

Madison may be used for a lot of college movies, or who knows, shows- especially after a lot of the crappy buildings (Universiy Square, Mosse, Van Hise) get introduced to the depths of hell. It has a lot of very beautiful places and could be used for romance movies, and oftentimes doesn't have a midwestern feel at all. It has a lot of good hospitals and could also be used for that...
Of course, the farmland will be used. Good chance the Door County area will be used. Lake Michigan can double as the Pacific or Atlantic.

I think the Oshkosh/Appleton/Green Bay/etc area will be mostly ignored.

This also gives huge credit to video game companies. I bet Ravensoft is pissing their pants in happiness.

I'd imagine northern Wisconsin will be used quite a bit with the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore along with Chequamegon National Forest. Lake Superior and Lake Michigan can both double for ocean backdrops quite easily... The Milwaukee Art Museum will probably be used quite a bit.. I actually just saw it in a music video the other week for a band called Codebreaker. You know... I don't really think any particular city has much draw. It's a specific location within a city that people will be looking for .. like a restaurant or strange coffee shop or what have you. If and when they film, they're not going to want to move around a lot.

A lot of successful states don't really have big cities. North Carolina, for instance, is very successful... but I think Madison will be popular. And Superior can't double for an ocean that well... it just looks a lot darker blue... a lot colder and more lake-y if that makes sense.

Lights! Camera! Tax breaks!
By Mike Ivey

Ah, the magic of film.

Shoot Wisconsin from the right angle, and it can look like a farm community in New England, a bustling Midwest college campus, big-city mean streets or a remote windswept beach.

Old buildings? Got 'em.

Jam-packed sports arena? Of course.

"The Last Kiss" was filmed last year in front of Bascom Hill on the University of Wisconsin campus.

Small-town taverns? Get real.

"I've shot scenes on the lake in Milwaukee, called it the Pacific Ocean, and nobody knew the difference," said Madison-based filmmaker Michael Graf.

There was some commercial awhile back for a power drink that had a runner leap across one of the drawbridges in Downtown Milwaukee. It was shot from a helicopter.

I saw an ad in Time Magazine a few years ago that showed a view of Milwaukee's city hall and the buildings immediately around it. It was for some kind of financial planning firm. They must have thought the stately 19th Century look fit the image they were trying to portray.

The point is there is good precedent for advertisers using Wisconsin settings for their unique attributes. Why not film-makers?

I saw them film that commercial... It was a powerade commercial shown mainly in movie theaters during previews. It was part of their campaign showing people doing crazy sports-related activities (remember the guy surfing the huge wave in the hurricane?). When they filmed it, it didn't really look all that impressive.. but the final product was amazing. If anyone can find that ad, share the link... it's a tough find though if you can find it at all.
