Aicha Qandisha (18th c.)



Aisha Qandisha was a berber woman with an exceptionnal beauty...She created the first guerrillas in the history, which had more value and honor than what we can see nowadays.

She was a chief" of an amazigh guerilla around Mazagan, fighting against the Portuguese occupant...She used to conduct with success her attacks against the interests and positions of the Portugueses... She also used to seduce them before killing them during the night

Zaynab, the Queen of Morocco



Born in 1039, in the High Atlas moutains, she married in fourth weddings ,Youssef Ibn Tachfin, the founder of the almoravid dynasty.
She had the idea to found a splendid capital for his empire: Marrakech
She had always assisted her imperial husband in his conquests and thanks to her he could control the totality of the Maghreb, from the Atlantic to the region of Algiers, from the desert to the sea, before conquering Andalusia

Lalla Fatma N'Soumer



N'Soumer was born in the Kabyle village of Werja, from a Muslim marabout family, around the year 1830. Depending on the source, she is said to have had 4 or 5 siblings. Her father, Sidi Ahmed Mohamed, directed the Koranic school (in the Berber language, timâammert) of Sidi Ahmed u Mezyan, in the nearby village of Summer. Traditional sources agree that Fadhma showed a decisive and stubborn character from her early childhood. As an example, she insisted on following lessons in the Koran in her father’s school, very unusual social behaviour for a young girl in that culture. She was an important figure of the Algerian resistance movement during the first years of the French colonial conquest of Algiers.

Queen Shajarat ad-Dur (died 1257)

Grew up as a slave girl in the Harem of the Abbasid Caliphs, she was renowned for her beauty, her name meaning Tree of Pearls. She was presented to the Ayyubid Sultan Salih bin Ayyub who married her shortly after.

After her husband died, she concealed his death as sickness and ruled in his stead while her son Turanshah was away on campaign. When Turnshah arrived he attempted to remove his mother from power. Since Turanshah had also alienated much of the bahri regiment, she had a member of the regiment, Ayback assassinate him. She assumed the role of Sultana, the only time this has ever happened. This revolt led to the establishment of the Mamluk empire.
