The stadium imploded wasn't in Minneapolis but the RCA dome (Hoosierdome) in Indianapolis. It was shown on the morning Sportscenter on ESPN on 12-20.
RCA Dome

Wasn't the RCA Dome only built in the 90s?
Yeah, but they discarded it because it was too small. Capacity: 60 thousand.

So they built a new, bigger stadium right next to it. Capacity: 63 thousand.

Good job, guys! :eek:hno:

Incorrect.

The stadium hosted its first event in 1984. In order to keep the Colts in Indy (read: generate revenues necessary to compete in the NFL), a new stadium needed to be built.

I've been to games at the RCA Dome. And while it was a great venue to watch a game (when the Colts were good and fans showed up and were loud), it was a bit of a dump and not up-to-snuff with NFL stadiums.

Lucas Oil is a fantastic replacement... so long as you don't have one of those obstructed seats!

Good ol' RCA Dome

Here's it with construction on Lucas Oil Stadium

Here is Lucas Oil Stadium towering over the Dome.

I loved this crappy stadium

It was the worst stadium in the NFL by far. It was tight, ugly, and had way too many bench seats for an NFL stadium. Also it was the smallest in the league. However, I watched Colts playoff wins and high school state championships in there. Now it's former spot is being replaced with convention center space.

With Lucas Oil Stadium plus this convention center expansion Indianapolis will have one of the largest convention centers in the country. Also receiving the Super Bowl and a chance at hosting World Cup matches, it was a wise decision to build a new stadium. It was a nice 24 year run.

The entire upper deck was just benches?
Yes. Initally much of the lower deck was, too. When they added some suites, and chair seating to the lower deck, capacity dropped from 60,000 to 55,000. Nobody really felt that the Colts were not justified in grumbling about the old stadium.
The lower deck was always regular seating all around. They added wider, more comfy seating on both sides of the 50 yard line areas, which helped to reduce the capacity.
I feel like I've seen pictures of exhibition baseball games here, was there ever a real thought on Indy's part to get a baseball team since it looks like BC Place and the Metrodome which both were built with baseball in mind?

Second question did they also have the unfortunate roof pattern that made the swastika shape like the Metrodome did?
Back in, I believe 1985, Indianapolis was trying to land an expansion franchise called the Indianapolis Arrows. They thought that the then called Hoosier Dome would be in their favor, but they measured the distances and one of the lines would have been too short - I believe under 300 feet, so the whole effort just went down the drain not too long after that.

I read that the Hoosier Dome hosted an Old-Timers game in the mid-eighties. I believe that was the only baseball game held there.
They did. None of the lower bowl was retractable though, so the right field line was only about 187 feet lol.
I'm shocked they didn't 1. build retractable seats 2. make them retract like the dolphins did the marlins 3. Didn't think this through. Coll that they made shirts and stuff though! Reminds me of the Tampa Bay Giants shirts I saw a kid here.

All in all this stadium didn't look to bad. But the new stadium is much better imho.
