President Suharto

I've created this thread for everyone to post pictures/scans of pivotal moments in Indonesia history that made it to the frontpages of newspapers around the world. Below is a chronology of the crazy times in 1998 which led to Suharto's fall nearly 8 years ago now, through the lens of the Sydney Morning Herald (Australia). I was only 15 at the time, but I was already keenly following developments through the paper, as the internet wasn't so ubiqutous at the time. I wonder if anyone has electronic images of the frontpages of KOMPAS, THE JAKARTA POST, STRAITS TIMES etc. around this period?? Please post them here!!

Doctors: Suharto’s organs have partly failed
Transfusions reportedly improve condition of former Indonesian dictator

Updated: 8:56 p.m. ET May 5, 2006
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Doctors treating ailing former Indonesian dictator Suharto said his condition was still not stable because his organs have partly failed, but ongoing blood transfusions have slightly improved his condition.

Suharto, 84, was admitted to Pertamina Hospital in the capital, Jakarta, on Thursday evening for intestinal bleeding. He also was having problems swallowing food, doctors said.

Brig. Gen. Marjo Subiandono, the presidential doctor, said late Friday the function of some of Suharto's organs has decreased by 70 percent.

"His condition is slightly better" after being hospitalized because of an increased red blood cell count, Subiandono said.

"There was still bleeding, and therefore he is still given blood transfusion," he added.

Earlier Friday, Subiandono said Suharto was "still conscious and he still recognized his family, but his condition is weak."

Suharto was accompanied to hospital by two of his children, Siti Hardijanti Rukmana and Sigit Harjojudanto, after complaining of feeling frail. Tests showed a low red blood cell count.

Suharto's long-running health problems have hampered attempts to prosecute him on corruption charges for years.

Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh renewed calls Friday for doctors to determine if he is fit enough to stand trial, saying it had been about four years since the last medical evaluation.

It was the fourth time since May 2004 that Suharto has been hospitalized for recurring intestinal bleeding, including a weeklong stay a year ago.

Suharto suffered permanent brain damage resulting from at least two strokes after his ouster in 1998.

A former general, he rose to power by crushing Indonesia's communist movement. He ruled the vast nation of 220 million for 32 years with an iron hand, only to be chased from office by street protests after Indonesia's economy collapsed during the Asia financial crisis amid allegations of widespread corruption.

Two years later, he was indicted for allegedly embezzling US$600 million, but legal proceedings against him were suspended due to his poor health.

Subiandono, a heart specialist who heads the team of presidential doctors, said Suharto, who has had a pacemaker fitted, was under close supervision.

Suharto made a rare public appearance Wednesday after meeting with Malaysia's former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. They met for about 30 minutes.

Indonesian Leader May Drop Suharto Charges

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Indonesia's parliament will consider dropping corruption charges against ailing former ruler Suharto during meetings with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Wednesday, a top government official said.

Suharto, 84, was successfully operated on Sunday for intestinal bleeding, prompting several leading officials to call for a pardon.

"The president will hold consultative meetings with the House speaker ... to discuss annulling charges against Suharto," State Secretary Yusril Ihza Mahendra said.

The talks were to be held Wednesday evening and attended by a wide range of legal and political leaders, he said.

Suharto was indicted soon after his ouster in 1998 for alleged corruption during the dictatorship, but has avoided trial because doctors told prosecutors a series of strokes had left him too sick to understand the proceedings.

Peradilan Soeharto Dihentikan

Seusai rapat pukul 23.30, Widodo AS memberi keterangan kepada wartawan.

Mestinya, kejaksaan bertindak progresif mencari terobosan hukum. "Dalih kemanusiaan cuma upaya menutupi ketidakmampuan menuntaskan kasus Soeharto.

Tugas saya selesai, apapun keputusan beliau kita tunggu saja," ujarnya.

Tak bisa in absentia

Indonesia could be on the front page of some papers tomorrow. Right now Merapi is on on the front page of the MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News websites (the three major US news networks).

Idiotic isn't it? A woman wearing a short skirt could be held longer in prison then Tommy's prison sentence for killing a judge.

Soeharto cannot walk with wealth: SBY

Tony Hotland, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has promised former president Soeharto would not be allowed to walk free with the wealth he and his family amassed during his 32-year reign, despite graft charges against the ailing former leader being dropped.

Amid the controversy following the Attorney General Office's decision to drop corruption charges against Soeharto, Yudhoyono said the government would seek an appropriate settlement of the case that embraced both justice and humanity.

"The solution to this case must not sacrifice the causes of justice and law enforcement in our country. If it's impossible to pursue prosecution due to Soeharto's health, we believe that the (cash-rich charitable) foundations (controlled by Soeharto), which are the reason we were pursuing the prosecution, can be relinquished to the state," Yudhoyono said.

He said the government would deal with any problems that might prevent the foundations, through which Soeharto is alleged to have embezzled some US$419 million and Rp 1.3 trillion ($150 million) in public money, from being handed over to the state.

Yudhoyono made his statement hours before Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh announced Friday that graft charges against Soeharto were being dropped due to the former president's poor health. However, he said the case could be reopened in the wake of new evidence or an improvement in Soeharto's physical condition.

The decision to halt the prosecution was issued by the Central Jakarta District Court, where Soeharto's case was first filed in 2000. The former strongman never appeared in court after being declared unfit to stand trial following several small strokes and other health complications.

Abdul Rahman said the decision on Soeharto would not affect the prosecution of the former president's associates alleged to have embezzled public money through the foundations.

The Attorney General's Office, which lifted Soeharto's travel ban Thursday to allow him to receive medical treatment abroad if he wishes, is now considering a civil suit against Soeharto to recover the state funds he is alleged to have embezzled.

However, a Soeharto lawyer, O.C. Kaligis, said Saturday that pursuing a civil case would be impossible given that the wealth in question was an inseparable part of the prosecution.

"(The decision to drop the prosecution) means everything is over," he said.

Soeharto, 84, on Thursday underwent his second surgery in a week after experiencing vomiting and breathing difficulties following a first surgery to stop intestinal bleeding.

Doctors, who said Soeharto could never stand trial due to permanent brain damage from several mild strokes, said Saturday the former president's condition was improving, although he was still experiencing some intestinal bleeding.(04)

Go after his family and cronies wealth all over the world. If we get just 30% of it, we'll be able to drastically cut our foreign debt. Time to pressure Singapore into opening their banking record and force them to extredite wanted criminals that is hiding in their backyard.
