What is RapidBET?

RapidBET stands for Rapid Bus Express Transit.

BET is a system where the buses utilise less congested highways to link heavily populated areas and the city centre. Naturally, by using the highways, travel time is reduced as the highways are less congested than the normal routes. The service will have limited stops and rely on feeder buses and park-n-ride facilities to ensure sufficient ridership. With BET, travel time is expected to be reduced by up to 50 per cent on certain BETs.

Why?

The service is introduced to shorten travel time for the routes chosen. This is one of the initiatives to making bus services attractive and accessible for all commuters.

Where?

For the introductory stage, two routes will be implemented starting Tuesday, 12 Jan. The routes are:

* RapidBET1 - Kota Damansara to KL Sentral & Pasar Seni via the Penchala Link
* RapidBET2 - Bandar Sungai Long to KL Sentral & Pasar Seni via the Grand Saga Highway

How were the BET routes identified?

The routes were identified based on population density and demand.

Will it be extended to other areas?

Yes, depending on demand.

How much time savings?

The time savings differ for each route but on average BET will shorten travel time up to about half on certain BETs.

What is the frequency of the buses?

RapidBET services are only available on weekdays and during the morning and evening peak hours only. For this initial introductory stage, BET will run at 15 to 20-minute intervals during the morning and evening peak hours. Frequency and service periods will be increased at a later stage depending on the demand for each route.

How many additional buses will BET involve?

Buses for BET routes are about four to six buses initially and will be reviewed from time to time as the demand grows. BET is more of an enhancement to the current services, whereby the focus is more to shorten the travel time.

Will RapidBET attract more people to use the bus?

We hope the shorter travel time, at existing fare, will be more attractive to commuters.

RapidBET bus system from KL to Kota Damansara and Sungai Long (Update)
By YENG AI CHUN

KUALA LUMPUR: Bus users in Shah Alam and Subang Jaya can look forward to cutting their travel time to the city centre by half when the RapidBET bus system is rolled out next week in their area.

They join commuters from Kota Damansara and Bandar Sungai Long, who started using the system Wednesday.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat announced the second set of routes after launching the RapidBET1 bus from Kota Damansara to Pasar Seni, via the Penchala Link.

The Bandar Sungai Long to Pasar Seni via the Grand Saga Highway route also began its run Tuesday.

He said the RapidBET bus system is part of the effort taken for the improvement of urban public transport under the national key results areas (NKRAs).

“What is important is that we walk the talk, we identifed the problems, we brainstormed day and night over the concerns of the people in the hope that by initiating some of the changes, we would be able to shorten the travelling time in the best interest of improving the quality of life and quality of bus service for the commuters.

“And I persume by so doing, ultimately this will also be a good booster to our bus service and at the same time, I believe this will attract more commuters to help enhance the ridership as well,” said Ong in a press conference.

Ong had boarded the RapidBET1 bus from Kota Damansara to Pasar Seni early in the morning with Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd Chairman Tan Sri Izzuddin Dali, group managing director Datuk Idrose Mohamed and RapidKL officers on its maiden route.

The system called Rapid Bus Express Transit (RapidBET), is part of an overall plan to upgrade the speed and comfort of the Klang valley’s bus system, cuts travel time by half and is available at peak hours in the morning and evening at 15-minute intervals.

RapidBET utilises less congested highways to link heavily populated areas and the city centre.

The service has limited stops and aims to get the commuters to work in half the time of the regular buses.

“RapidBET would also be extended to other areas but it would depend on the demand for such a service.

“Other states would also be in the plan as Klang Valley is not our only focus. But for a beginning, we want to make sure the system works before extending it to other areas such as Penang and Johor Bahru,” he said.

Ong added the Government is also looking into having feeder buses and park-and-ride facilities in residential areas to further cut commuting time.

Currently, the regular bus U88, plies the route from Kota Damansara to Pasar Seni and the journey takes two hours or more depending on the traffic.

Maximum fare for U88 is at RM3, which is the same as the fare for RapidBET1.

The RapidBET1 bus from Kota Damansara to Pasar Seni operates during peak office hours from 6.30am to 7.15am and from 6pm to 6.45pm.

It aims to get commuters to work and back from work within an hour bus ride.

There are 3,000 commuters using the bus U88 during peak hours and about 30% of the commuters embark at the Pasar Seni station.

BET is a good try in improving public transport in KL.

But in case of BRT (referhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bus_rapid_transit), is not suitable for KL because of road condition and urban planning mistakes formerly done.

err....care to elaborate more?

do u suggest Bangkok, Jakarta and Bogota has 'better road condition and urban planning'?

as BRT was first invented not in any mega modern highly developed city which has almost perfect road condition and urban planning, but a less known city of Brazil....right?

New public transport system gets off to a good start

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, RapidKL officers and members of the media were scheduled to board the bus at 7.15am.

Tram-like buses for 2 cities

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang and Johor Baru will be the first two cities in the peninsula to get underway the Transport Ministry's tram-like transport system called the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line.

Widely-used worldwide, the tram-like transport costs less to develop compared to Light Rail Transit.

Brainstorming sessions between the authorities and public transport experts on the system are going on.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the authorities are looking at some of the models that are being used abroad, including the Bogota model.

"We are aware that the LRT system is quite costly.

"We are looking at BRT lines which could cover more areas," he said.

Ong said this after the launch of RapidBET or Rapid Bus Express Transit routes from Kota Damansara and Sungai Long to Pasar Seni.

It is said to cut travelling time by half.

RapidBet is slightly different from the BRTs as it uses less congested highways to link populated areas with the city centre.

BRTs, on the other hand have tram-like characteristics with special bus lanes.

It allow buses to operate at a high level of reliability.

Ong said the authorities are also looking at densely populated areas, including Puchong, to start the BRT lines.

"It will depend on the need. Our priority is connectivity and cutting travelling time," he said after an early morning bus ride from Kota Damansara to Pasar Seni and from Sg Long to Pasar Seni using the new RapidBET.

He was impressed as the journey took 62 minutes instead of the usual two hours.

Both the projects are under the National Key Results Area (NKRA) under the 1Malaysia initiative.

Ong said the ministry wanted to cut travelling time not only for Klang Valley folks but also for commuters in other states.

He said the RapidBet was the first step towards expanding such systems in Klang Valley and BRTs in the two states.

Other than the two lines, Ong said the ministry was also planning to revive mini buses, as it was found to be small and flexible, to serve residential areas.

Other measures include creating more Park and Ride spots and more bus stations.

Penang and Johor Baru !!!!?
Seems like speculation or poor writing.

The plan is for BET in 2009, expanded bus lanes in 2010 and BRT in 2011-2012...and that is just for the Klang Valley.

They have not really looked at the other cities yet but they may start doing so...perhaps if they start the feasibility studies at the same time, it will be easier to implement in Penang and JB? Maybe that way there would be multiple BRT introduced.

One thing that would be a good intermediate step is expansion of BET ... and they could have BET services in Penang (ok, perhaps only 3 routes maximum but good nevertheless) and JB.

BRT in the Klang Valley would be more like the current LRT system, following the highways...so feeder bus service will still be needed to link the housing estates to the highways.

Cheers, m
BET is onli for 1 hr peak period during the morning and evening rush hours.

I guess JB will use BRT and finally forget about the LRT and monorail. If we think properly where to find so many billions of ringgit to build such things in Iskandar and Penang? The density in JB cant suport such a LRT system.

JB just need a proper komuter line and a link to Singapore MRT at the JB Sentral that should be the first priority.
^^

I think eventually JB and Penang will have commuter rail service, because of Ipoh-Padang Besar and Gemas-JB electrified double tracking projects...

JB Sentral has six platforms, obviously, i think they do consider the introduction of commuter rail service around JB and its environs, because KL Sentral also has six platforms (for KL)...

SMRT link to JB, will relieve pressure in the causeway, but i wonder how they handle the immigration aspect?
JB will have, commuter train service from Gemas or Segamat to JB, like the mail train.

Penang maybe not. Commuter train service from Sungai Petani to Butterworth then to Parit Buntar or Taiping is suggested.

Komuter Selatan for JB but there are also plans for light rail lines...whether they build LRT or rapid trams will have to be seen.

The plan for the lines and the density is all available.

As for the MRT link, it will probably be to supplement the Causeway and link to the Larkin terminal.

Immigration...depends on how Malaysia wants to handle it. My guess is that the MRT link will be nominally a "Malaysian" MRT (Malaysian immigration at the entrance in Singapore and Singapore immigration at the exit in Singapore)...but it will be operated by SMRT corp.

RapidBET extends services to Subang Mewah and Taman Sri Muda
By OH ING YEEN

[email protected]

USJ and Shah Alam residents can now enjoy the RapidBET services following its launch yesterday.

The RapidBET3 and RapidBET4 travels between Subang Mewah in USJ 1 (in front of the Meranti Apartments along Persiaran Subang Mewah) and Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, to the Central Market bus terminal in Jalan Sultan Mohamed.

With RapidBET3, travel time is reduced by 30 minutes from the normal 80 minutes. The line uses the Kesas and NPE highways, with limited seven pick-up/drop-off points compared with the normal 21.

RapidBET4 is expected to reduce travel time by 20 minutes from the usual 90 minutes. Pick up/drop off points are limited to six, compared with the usual 30.

The other two routes that were introduced on Jan 12 were RapidBET1, from Kota Damansara to Pasar Seni, and RapidBET2 from Bandar Sg Long to Pasar Seni.

Mona Lisa Nanyapergasan, who lives in Shah Alam, said she planned to take the RapidBET4 but had missed the bus and resorted to taking the usual RapidKL bus to Bangsar.

“I wanted to take the bus this morning as I heard that it would cut short the travelling time but unfortunately I missed it,” she said.

Rohaya Idris, who commutes from the Bangsar LRT to Bangsar Shopping Centre, had read about the bus but is sceptical that it will make much difference.

However, upon hearing that the bus would save 20 to 30 minutes in travel time, she said she would give it a try.

“I hope they will have more routes around Kuala Lumpur,” she suggested.

Association for the Improve-ment of Mass Transit chairman Moaz Yusof Ahmad said RapidBET was a good start but added that there was much room for improvement.
Wait up: A commuter boardng the RapidBET3 bus in USJ.

“It’s (RapidBET) an improvement but it can go on a larger scale. Aside from just connecting commuters from the sub-urban to city, why not connect people between suburbs?

“It will be good to see more routes for RapidBET instead of just four. For example, there can be one commuting between Damansara and Ampang.

“We need to see more people taking public transport,” he said.

He added that extending the time of RapidBET services would be good, provided that more commuters were in need of such services.

“Why were the people not consulted (on the routes)? Persiaran Kewajipan (used by RapidBET3) is heavily jammed during peak hours.

“Instead of using that road, the bus could use the Kesas highway to link commuters to Sri Petaling, where the Sri Petaling LRT is situated, as well as the Bukit Jalil LRT station and then to KL,” he suggested.

According to Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana), RapidBET3 & 4 will operate at 15-minute intervals from 6.15am during morning peak hours and 30-minute intervals from 5.30pm during evening peak hours.

RapidBET 3 is an enhancement to the current U63 route (USJ 8 to Pasar Seni), while RapidBET4 is an enhancement to the current U64 route (from Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam to Pasar Seni).

However, there were no RapidBET signs at the RapidBET3 stops.

When contacted, Prasarana replied that the signs will be placed soon.

RapidBET, which stands for Rapid Bus Express Transit, is one of the Government’s National Key Result Area (NKRA) efforts to improve urban public transportation in the Klang Valley.
