Hi guys, im currently in Sydney at the moment and the one thing I have noticed is the amount of Australian flags everywhere, especially this massive one in Darling Harbour

Which got me thinking, were a very patriotic nation, why isnt there any Irish flags around Dublin? Being the capital city. It would be absolutely brilliant to see a giant Irish flag hanging from the top of the spire, any other country would do it!

I wouldn't like it atop the Spire. It would be too far up and would require maintenance and take from the slimline elegance which is one of the main features of the Spire. If we were to put the Tricolour near the Spire I would prefer to take inspiration from the Washington Monument in DC which has a circle of US flagpoles flying around the obelisk.

That said, there are quite a few Irish flags around Dublin - the GPO, Leinster House, Áras an Uachtaráin, the Four Courts, Criminal Courts of Justice and several hotels, banks and retail establishments (most notably Brown Thomas on Grafton Street) fly the Tricolour.
No, it'd look incredibly tacky.

I don't want us to have flags all over the place.
An Oirish flag is not a good idea but Limerickguy being impaled sound more sensible. That would be a true patriotic gesture.
Maybe merit in it for the 1916 celebrations in 2 years. Otherwise it's not the right place nor the right structure in my opinion. Something like that would be best fronting Dublin Bay.

How about they light up the Spire properly at night like they showed in the original renders back in '00?

It could look magnificent if lit up correctly but right now there's some random aviation strip of light in the middle and a blob of light at the top. Very odd.

Bring back Vectorial Elevation to Dublin and make it a permanent feature.

I saw it in the UAE as well.(YES THEY ARE DICTATORSHIPS, NOT CONDONING THAT STUFF) It looked good. I would not be against it.
There is a gigantic National Flag in the Central Plaza in Mexico City. I believe its put up at dawn each day and taken down at sunset in a rather elaborate ceremony.

Heres an article dealing with the Mexican example above. It seems its not only a feature of Mexico City. Although that flag is certainly a long tradition.

Good idea, except it would cost Dublin City tax payers 1000s per night to illuminate it like that.
As a Dublin city tax payer, I don't mind.

If you're going to call something the Monument of Light, you might as well light the feckin thing up properly.

Would look good. Could imagine on St Patricks lightening it up green!
Anyone have an image of what it was meant to look like at night?
As it does now.

It could be further illuminated with lighting from opposite buildings. I would support that.
