This thread is for the development of a two storey rooftop extsntion to Irwell Chambers on Union Street in the CBD. Irwell Chambers was built in 1870, originally operating as offices, but has been used for residential use for some time. In 2015, it received an upgrade, bringing into use the basement and increasing the number of apartments from 50 to 65. The new plans will see a two storey rooftop extension added. Comprising 20 apartments, configured as six one-bedroom apartments, 12 two-bedroom apartments and two duplexes, three existing top floor apartments will make way for the development, resulting in a final cumulative tally of 82 apartments in the building. Funding totalling £2.1m was secured from Frontier Development Capital and Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking in January 2018.

Ready for the next lift on Union Street -

Adding what will be a modest-sized tower crane to possibly the shortest building in the immediate vicinity means views are a bit tricky. However if you try enough vantage points, you might get lucky, like this perfectly framed view from the dock road -

And about ten minutes later from a little further back -

Always been a bit surprised that no one has thought to sneak on something over the Strand exit of the Queensway exit tunnel linking the 'Atlantic' tower to the 'Capital' building...

Would be / Could be a nice little infill in the city scape... 😎

Excuse the bad sun glare. So far beyond the crane and the scaffolding lining the edge of the roof, there's not much to report, but with the crane now in place, I reckon this should starting moving soon enough -

Also, I know they are perfectly safe, but the arrangement of the counterweights on the crane, visually at least, suggests otherwise -

Difficult one for updates, however, the extension now spans across the full length of the building:
