Is Macau a third world country?

5180 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Pangu
I just wented on a tour to macau for my spring break. I come back with a question. Is Mecau a third world country(region..)? It seems the public sophistication is very low there. The places that most interested me are those near the China-macau border.

Perhaps GDP is not a very good measure. People spit, and pick their nose on the streets. What the hell is that?

Here in Texas, once you get out of the urban areas, people spit, pick their noses, and some even piss in public. Of course, even within urban areas, such as my hometown of Houston, it isn't rare to run into people who do those things mentioned above either.

As far as I know, whether a country/region is considered "third world" or not depends on the GDP, and not some kind of universal social behavior standard... which would be very difficult to measure unless one is to assume EVERYONE in the world have the same values and behave the same way...

Macau is not Texas (or wherever it is Texas...). Macanese people is polite and not rude barbarians.
macau is definitely not a third world country, at least you dont see any homelessness and people begging in the streets.

btw, i dont think i have see anyone split when i was in macau, coz u have to pay a very heavy fines by doing it.

Who said people of Macau are "rude barbarians"? A tad sensitive aren't we? BTW, it's kant who said that people in Macau pick their noses and spit on the ground, not me. I was merely pointing out that such behavior is not limited to third world countries/regions... :sleepy:

After I visited Texas a few times... I thinks that Texas does not
look `1st world' at all... Even 3rd world countries have 1st world looking
corners and vice-versa....

Where did you go in Texas? You can still get a taste of first world in major cities like Houston, Dallas, Austin but aside from that, rural Texas is pretty third world-like.

Yes, apparently they believe discrimination based on stereotype is an acceptable behavior...

Frankly, I'd hate to see a nose that has never been... "picked"...

However, just like farting, pissing and any other... more "private" activities, they should not be conducted in public.
