well, the development of istanbul is different than american cities or their imitators. Istanbul cannot be as planned as san francisco or new york, because it was always a big city, the development of istanbul is natural and distributed on a very long time in history. For example, if istanbul was as young as new york, the skyscraper region would be todays historical peninsula and around golden horn in my opinion. Or even around Bosphorus there would be a lot of skyscrapers, maybe. Istanbul's very city center is not where the skyscrapers are and Istanbul is not mainly about skyscrapers. She is just a good balance of an extremely historical city and a modern city. Paris can be an example to such development, yet Istanbul's skyscraper clusters will be much stronger than Paris's, plus we have bosphorus and sea, bridges and hilly landscape which I like a lot (although most of the time skyscrapers are hidden behind the hills). Besides, istanbul has many skyscraper clusters, which is good. In todays world there is no need to build huge buildings just next to each other... Until the big improvements in telecommunication field it was necessary, so naturally business wanted to be altogether to make everything easier and faster. NY is a good example for that. Yet it brings together a huge traffic load, no-sun problems, huge crowd and many other problems. Istanbul's skyscraper regions are not, and hopefully will not be packed so densely, leaving more open space for living. Example, I would say, Kuala Lumpur.
