i went to Jackson after going gambling with a friend in Philadelphia, Mississippi.

i was really suprised by the city; although it was very slow downtown, that was a nice thing; vehicle traffic was so light i didn't have to worry about getting hit. there was a decent amount of street life, and a lot of rennovation seemed to be taking place.

a lot of pics taken from my friend's car, and we were in a hurry to get back to Birmingham, so the quality on some's not the best, but who knows when there's going to be another Jackson thread?

i took this pic back in march while going to Texas; Jackson looks better at street level

gorgeous capitol building...my new favorite i think

at the casino, me and my friend joked about Philadelphia not having a Liberty Bell...talk about a coincedence

the rest of the city...

governor's mansion

the little brother of Nashville's Snodgrass Tower

sadly vacant church

i was suprised to see this ruin...the Hotel King Edward, vacant since 1967

more information and better pics of it here.jpg

great news; the state's giving $2 million towards restoration and redeveloping it.jpg

across the street's the recently rennovated AMTRAK station

more rennovation nearby

and on the other side is part of the Farish district. Farish was the African-American district, and a rennovation's under way to turn part of it into a nightlife district; read more.jpg

some stuff just outside the main part of downtown

Victorian

art deco

modern

one of a few 50s-era looking buildings in this area under rennovation

BONUS PICS:

Meridian

Golden Moon Casino outside of Philadelphia

Good Pics. The pics starting at the governers mansion would not load on my comp. Hope you had a good time. I like the Amsouth building the best and the city park is nice.

I liked Jackson, too, when I went there for the day. I was in school in Tuscaloosa and got bored one Saturday. I drove to Jackson, looked around, and came back home.

Wow. There are some striking similarities between Jackson and Columbia...the state house, the governor's mansion, and the old Greyhound station! Nice shots!

thanks. i noticed a few others:

- the building behind the Greyhound station looks like the (old) Wachovia building in Columbia

- lots of nice old churches downtown

- Farish felt like parts of the Vista before gentrification

- war memorials...especially the Confederate women memorial

- the street we took into Jackson reminded me of some of the streets a bit out from the center of Columbia (Harden around Benedict college for example; Devine Street; some of the streets with state offices)

Excellent pictures. I have been to Jackson a couple of times and I have enjoyed it. Jackson certainly is a nice small-to-mid size city, and it rarely gets any attention.

I've been to Jackson twice, and it's your typical sleepy Southern city, not that that's a bad thing. Great pics, LSyd!

Ha

The funny thing is sonofaque86 that the building behind the Greyhound station is a Wachovia building. I know alot of people don't rep. Jackson enough on here but I am a Jacksonian and I guess it is now my duty to. So you guys will be seeing some good Jacktown picks soon. I will give you some grit also.
