King Faisal Specialist Hospital, Expansion

Vanderweil participated in developing the overall master plan to expand the existing hospital to a campus encompassing over 2,000,000 sf. The first phase includes a new Expansion Hospital, an Oncology Hospital, a Royal Hospital, a Logistics building and parking garage, a Central Utility Plant, and an underground tunnel network.
The Expansion Hospital is 1.3 million sf, consisting of a 6 level podium, and two distinct bed towers; one housing the Pediatrics Center and the other housing a Cardio/Neurology Center. In the middle of the structure is a 23 level Research Tower. The expansion hospital includes 30 operating rooms, ICU, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, central sterile processing, labs, pharmacy, and many support functions such as cafeteria, administrative offices, training and development, auditorium, library, and lobbies. The expansion includes over 350 new patient beds.

A key component to the project is the enabling projects required to relocate critical infrastructure to permit the phased construction of the new project. Normal power, emergency power, chilled water, domestic water, and sanitary systems all must be relocated to a new utility zone for service to existing structures. The master plan included an assessment of the existing infrastructure and design of parallel utility systems to accommodate the new construction.
