If the police wanted to cut out crime completely, they could.

Thing is, if there was no crime, the huge police forces and police ministers, would all be out of the job. ;)

no they couldnt. Cutting out crime is impossible. How do you stop people from killing each other?
You get in between. :p

Seriously though - Singapore can be considered a 'justice' city.
Singapore does offer the best example of a 'Justice City'.

Force and deterant by means of corporal punishment is by far the best means of public control.I like it when someone gets the cane for doing something wrong or detrimental to the well being of society.

No pain! No gain!!
Well if we look at a pure urban design perspective then there are layouts that deter crime and others which encourage it.

A lot of the Council Estates built in the UK in the 1960's and 70's had a fad for hundreds of high-level pedestrian walkways and gloomy stairwells, each estate had hundreds of rat-runs through them known only to the criminals so police never had a hope and they were a muggers' paradise.

The traditional design of terraced streets were much safer as there were no invisible areas; everywhere in each street was in full view of hundreds of people.
ppl in the west may consider them hardliners, but saudi arabia is one damn justice country as a whole.

ppl actually leave a glass boxed jewelry shop open to go for prayers, and there r no security guards or cameras fitted without any fear. Theft, robbery, murder of unheard of.

YES it is unbelievable but this is my first hand experience and over a long time. There are only very few crimes and that too involving some asian immigrants.
^^ North-Korea doens't have much crime either. But i prefer some crime and living in freedom than in a country without much crime where the state or religious leaders tell me what to do and think.

I am glad to hear that.

I have lived ther for a while and there is no such thing that state is telling you what to do and what to think. This is a media propoganda.

I believe you live in north Korea and i believe you like it too. Try asking some one from europe or US on what they think of N. Korea as a state(i dont blame them, but thats what the media promote), and you will understand what i mean between propoganda and reality.

I am not accusing korea nor defending the saudis( i like both of them :)), but some things are not really as bad as they are being portrayed.

I agree with kbboy, whole of middle east has less crime rate.

BTW, anyone from japan, i heard tokyo has very less crime rate? find it hard to believe coz its such a big city!!

Repression doesn't solve ANY problems, that's a fact. Much more important is social and economical as well as political and environmental stability in a city or a country. Unequality leads to higher criminal rates - if you have a death sentence or not in that state or country.

A country which is generally very poor as North Korea or some Micronesian islands don't have a high criminal rate because there is no greed and jealousy.

Brazil, RSA or USA have high rates because on one side their gini coefficient is very bad and second they are "lands of plenty" but a big part of the pop doesn't have the chance to participate.

Another thing that I never will understand (it's only explainable by corruption) is the prohibition and repression on DRUGS. Because they are illegal they cause the following:
- mafia-like gangs for smuggling and selling
- slavary and abusing of farmers that are forced to plant what the mafia tells them for very low prices
- no chance of quality control of the drugs by the government that leads to a lot of deaths
- corruption in politics
- endangering of the pop that has nothing to do with this business (stray bullets, gang and police wars etc.)
- criminalizing of drug-users and thus endangering them to become REAL criminals
- and BILLIONS of tax money that is just non existent by one of the most florishing economy in the world

A Colombian politition once said: We don't have problems with drugs, it's in our culture. The American have a problem of drug ABUSE and that's why WE have a problem now.... How right he was!

With all respect but: Bullshit!

Repression doesn't solve every problem, right. But it can solve problems, or it play a major part of the solution. Just look at the Platzspitz and Letten problem we had in Zürich, it was the "no repression" politics of the sozialist that led to both of those, and it was repression that played a major part in solving it.
Repression is the only way to control the human race. The smell of leather and the crack of the whip has sent people running since the dawn of time.
