JSW Cement seeking statutory nod for second plant in Karnataka

Pankaj Kulkarni

JSW Cement, a part of the JSW Group, is in the process of seeking statutory approvals to undertake exploratory drilling at a limestone deposit in Gulbarga district in Karnataka.

It will be the first step taking forward the company’s proposal for setting up a three million tonne clinkerisation plant in Chittapur in the northern district of the State, JSW Cement Director Pankaj Kulkarni said here on Tuesday.

Investment
At current estimates, the plant would entail an investment of Rs.2,000-2,500 crore, he replied to a query from presspersons. JSW Cement has three facilities, which together add to a capacity of six million tonnes portland slag cement (PSC). They are at Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh; Vijayanagar in Bellary, Karnataka; and Dolvi in Maharashtra.

The drilling would establish limestone reserve in the area. Thereafter, the land acquisition is to be initiated. “It will take two to three years to start the project,” he said, adding that three MT clinker would help make six million tonne PSC. The clinker is to be converted into PSC at the grinding units near the consumption centres.
The proposed facility is one of the components of JSW’s plan to increase the cement capacity to 25 million tonne by 2025.

JSW Cement is betting big on PSC, particularly on the back of the Centre’s emphasis on infrastructure development. The company is also in the process tying up with large consumers such as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. In order to create awareness of the benefits of PSC, the company, over the next few months, intends to educate the users.

Siddaramaiah 's nod for Kalaburagi industrial hub likely today

KALABURAGI: An industrial township is one of the goodies proposed for the neglected north Karnataka region. Chief minister Siddaramaiah is likely to approve the National Investment and Manufacturing Zone (NIMZ) at Ka laburagi during the review meeting of the industries department here on Friday.

Siddaramaiah, who also holds the large and medium industries portfolio, will take a decision on land allotment for NIMZ in the backward Hyderabad-Karnatak region. The departmental review has been scheduled an hour before the cabinet meeting.

If approved, this will be the second NIMZ in the state after Tumakuru. The NIMZ is planned on 12,500 acre s in Chitapur, home turf of Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) leader Mallikarjun M Kharge. "The location is close to Kalaburagi city, railway station and the proposed airport. We will also urge the CM to create a single-window clearance committee for the projects exclusively for Hyderabad-Karnataka region," Priyank Kharge, MLA of Chitapur, said. The NIMZ will be akin to an integrated urban industrial township. The NIMZ will be set up over an area of over 50 sqkm and will house all facilities needed to fuel an entire ecosystem of industrial investment-led development. The proposed NIMZ at Tumakuru (between Tumakuru and Gubbi taluks) will come up on more than 11,000 acres covering 45 sqkm area.

The new industrial policy 2014-19 announced in October has given huge tax sops for industries wanting to set up their units in this backward region. "The proposals and units that would be set up in this region, among others, will be discussed in the review meeting," K Ratna Prabha, additional chief secretary, commerce and industries, said.
33 firms want to shift from Andhra Pradesh

The CM is likely to announce the names of 33 companies that have shown interest to shift their base from Andhra Pradesh to Karnataka. Among the 33 companies, some pharma units have evinced interest in establishing units in Yadgir district. Soft drink giant Coca-Cola has already started works for its new plant in Yadgir. Nearly 40 subjects, mostly having north Karnataka flavour, are listed for discussion and clearance at the cabinet meeting on Friday.

HKCCI seeks focus on MSMEs

Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HKCCI) has urged the Union government to accord equal or more importance to the development of Medium, Small, and Micro Establishments (MSMEs) by extending liberal credit and incentives alongside the assistance provided for the development of major industries.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that was released to the press in Kalaburagi on Wednesday, president of the HKCCI Radhakrishna Raghoji and secretary Amarnath Patil said that while the major industries that got a lot of importance was capital-intensive, MSMEs were labour-intensive. They urged the Prime Minister not to go ahead with the proposed policy of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brands and this will lead to the collapse of the domestic multi-brand market leading to large-scale unemployment. The letter also demanded sanction of a special economic zone in Kalaburagi to give fillip to industrial and economic development.

JSW Cement to hike capacity fourfold, foray into RMC

JSW Cement Ltd, a part of the $11-billion JSW Group, is all set to enter the ready mix concrete (RMC) business and further boost its capacity by starting clinkerising units in three more cities with total investments of around Rs 5,000 crore over a period of five years.

In an interaction with Deccan Herald, JSW Cement Ltd Director and CEO Anil Kumar Pillai said that the investments would help the company increase production capacity to 25 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from the current 6 mtpa.

“As part of the plan, we are investing Rs 3,000 crore at Chittapur in Gulbarga and Rs 600 crore to set up a grinding facility near Nandyal. The additional investment of Rs 900 crore will be for starting clinkerisation units and Rs 250 crore for RMC units,” he said.

“We think it will be the right moment to enter the business as it will bring in more revenues to our existing business model. We have started a RMC unit at Kurnool which validate the prospects for this business as we do not want to commit to a segment where existing players have set benchmarks,” he said.

Besides the space constraints in cities and shorter deadlines for builders, the construction industry is facing massive labour shortages and increasingly looking at mechanisation. This, coupled with the fast growth of the infrastructure sector and largescale construction, is pushing builders towards the RMC segment.

According to Pillai, JSW Cement will become only a Portland slag cement manufacturing company by the end of next year. “We want to build our brand with environment-friendly products. Slag cement can play a major role here, and our company will take a lead in this segment,” he said.

About the future growth trajectory for the company, he said the goal is to be known as an engineering company instead of a commodity product company. “As part of this initiative, we are actively looking into entering the precast concrete block segment and other related products in due course of time,” he said. Pillai said the company is ready to push for inorganic growth if it finds appropriate target companies.

Talking on the new government’s initiatives, he said cement companies are seeing more momentum for the economy. “The new government is placing more thrust on infrastructure projects and we find opportunities in it. Actually, our capacity utilisation last year was below optimum levels as demand was not there,” he said.

Orient Cement Gulbarga plant to go on steam in June

Hyderabad, Jan 23:
Orient Cement Ltd, part of the $1.6-billion diversified CK Birla Group, expects to get its "greenfield’ plant in Gulbarga, Karnataka, on steam by June 2015.

The cement major has already invested Rs. 1,300 crore of the estimated Rs. 1,900 crore for the plant, which has a capacity of producing 3 million/tonnes per annum. It will meet the demands of parts of Karnataka, Maharastra and Andhra Pradesh.

The company registered a net profit of Rs. 31 crore (Rs 23 crore) for the quarter ended December 31, 2014, a 36 per cent increase over the corresponding quarter of last year. Its turnover stood at Rs. 384 crore ( Rs. 341 crore).

The company expects demand to pick-up in the coming quarter on the back of increased spending in rural and semi-urban housing, and improvement in orders from infrastructure projects, according to Deepak Khetrapal, Managing Director.

It would take at least a couple of more quarters for the big projects, plans unveiled by the Centre and states like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to start taking off and kick-up demand for the construction material. Over the past two years, the going has been tough for the sector, he told BusinessLine.

In Telangana and AP, where the company has been traditionally strong, the demand-supply mismatch has impacted the fortunes of most players. The capacity utilisation has been between 50-60 per cent and prices low on an average. The best news in recent times has been halt to the decline of consumptions in the past few months. The positive signals from the two government’s have raised hopes of the industry, Khetrapal said.
