KHARGE PLANS NEW RAILWAY DIVISION AT GULBARGA

In the run up to this year’s general elections, railways minister Mallikarjun Kharge plans to announce the creation of a new railways divisional headquarters at his constituency at Gulbarga in Karnataka.

“The blueprint of the proposed railway division — comprising areas including Yadgir, Bidar, Raichur and parts of Bijapur besides Gulbarga — have been readied and the announcement is shortly expected”, sources close to Kharge said.

Although it is not incumbent on the railways minister to seek cabinet approval for the plan, Kharge is likely to discuss the subject with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other cabinet colleagues next week.

The Railways presently have 17 zonal headquarters and 68 divisions. Most ministers in the past have shown a marked preference to rail projects or creation of railway zones and divisions in their home states or their constituencies. Official justifications for creating a new railway division at Gulbarga are that Karnataka has just three divisions at present against seven for Maharashtra and six of Andhra Pradesh.

Sections of officials, however, say that the policy of spreading it thin actually becomes counter-productive. Also, in what is seen as fallout of the Telangana movement, the UPA government is considering plans to set up new railways zonal headquarters at Vishakhapatnam as well. Kharge is also pursuing plans to set up another rail coach factory at Kolar costing ` 1,100 crore.

As railways minister, Ram Vilas Paswan announced the creation of seven new railway zones, including one at his constituency at Hajipur in Bihar.

THIS IS UNCALLED,
Let us wait till Gulbarga gets it own forum, until then we cant have threads for each and everything of every city..

Mods please move the content to railway thread and delete this thread
I guess there is no harm in this... when Gulbarga can have separate thread for City Transport and why cant it have seperate thread for Railways looking at the recent developments more posts are related to Railways... Also this thread will help to get Gulbarga a sub-forum for sure...

That's awesome!! Watering facility at GR!! I think it would have been better if it was planned between PF 3 & 4. Two trains could have been serviced simultaneously. Now only train on PF 1 can avail the facility.

@MM
Whenever I vist Karnataka Railway developments thread I see most of the development news related to Gulbarga.
So a thread exclusively to track the railway developments is very much needed and the developments will go on happening if Divisional headquarters is established.
As sunil said this also will pave way for the Gulbarga Subform:eek:kay:

Towards Platform 4 there is less land as there is Railway quarters at the maximum they can build only one platform but if the railway quarters is shifting to new identified land then probably additional 2 platform can be built....

Towards platform 1 there was Goodshed which now is being shifted towards Taj Sultanpur station... so, at the maximum they can have rake parking, VIP siding etc...

So over all if Railways wants they can build at maximum another 2 (if quarters is shifted) platforms thats it not more than that....

Parallely they should develop Taj-Sultanpur as next terminus... and rakes can be parked in Sultanpur hence freeing the main trunk route in Gulbarga ...

Development works at Gulbarga station to be completed by year-end

Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, chairman, Passenger Amenities Committee, Indian Railways, has said that the works taken up at Gulbarga railway station will be completed by the year-end. “They will help boost the demand for a railway divisional office at Gulbarga,” he told presspersons here on Friday.

Mr. Narayanaswamy was here on Friday to inspect the ongoing works at the station.

Additional concrete benches, automatic ticket vending machines, battery-operated buggies, and another booking office are some of the facilities which are going to come up here. The construction of a new platform and widening of existing platforms; commissioning of escalators on existing platforms; building roof over platforms; construction of a food plaza; and building a carriage watering and charging facility would be completed by February-end.

New rail division: hopes pinned on Kharge

Ahead of the Vote-on-Account slated for February 12, people of the State have pinned their hopes on Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge to announce the creation of a new railway division in Gulbarga and bring it under the South Western Railway (SWR).
The demand for a railway division in Gulbarga, one of the major freight-intensive locations of the Railways, has been pending for over four decades. Even the H.C. Sareen Committee appointed by the Railway Ministry (1984) had recommended the creation of a new division as it is the most backward region in the State.

In a recent letter to Mr. Kharge, Prakash Mandoth, member of South Western Railway Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee, said that what was needed was political will for the creation of the new division. He gave the example of the creation of the Salem division in 2008 by the then Railway Minister Lalu Prasad following pressure mounted by the United Progressive Alliance partner, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Tremendous growth
As a revenue division of the State, Gulbarga has been witnessing tremendous growth in the past decade, he said. Gulbarga also has a permanent Bench of the High Court of Karnataka. A Greenfield airport is coming up and information technology and textile parks have been proposed. The region has nine mega cement plants besides the proposed thermal power plants of NTPC at Bijapur.

Mr. Kharge’s announcement on the administrative office of the Sholapur division of the Central Railway (CR) in Gulbarga is not enough. It should culminate in a full-fledged division, he said. Important railway stations of the region — Raichur, Halkatta, Yadgir, Wadi, Shahabad, Gulbarga, Sedam, Chittapur, Tandur and Bidar are divided among the Central Railway, Mumbai, and South Central Railway (SCR), Secundrabad. People in Karnataka have to approach either Sholapur and Nanded or Secundrabad and Guntakal of the South Central Railway for grievance redressal or to get new trains, Mr. Mandoth said.

While about Rs. 2,000 crore revenue is generated by the Railways in the region, it is essential to create the division to fulfil the aspirations of the people, he said. Mr. Mandoth urged the Minister to take the same initiative he had taken to get special status to Hyderabad Karnataka region under Article 371 J, to create the new division too. The new division may include Hotgi-Indi Road; Hotgi-Mantralayam Road; Gulbarga-Bidar new line; Bidar-Latur Road; Gadag-Wadi new line and Koppal-Raichur new line.
