plan and layout of this vihar is good. But for me, more impressive in this photo is the colossal expanse of deccan plains behind the vihar. Vast stretch of the plain land in all directions as long as you can see is quite a view in itself. Not quite something you get to see around Hubli-Dharwad which are close to Malnad region peppered with hills and mountains. Good pic any ways.

Timeless treasures

Veteran artist Gopal Subhedar may have passed away last year but his memories live on through his diverse works.

A retrospective exhibition comprising drawings and paintings of the late artist will be showcased in a show titled Preserving the Legacy next month. Subhedar, a disciple of master painter Late A A Almelkar in the early 70s, was an alumni of the Sir J J School of Arts and this upcoming show has been brought together by his family.

Subhedar started his artistic journey with still-life pictures, nature and landscapes but ensured that his works stood out from the rest. Determined that he wanted to be different and enthusiastic about learning as much as he could, his pictures had a certain style about them, which made them unique. A recipient of numerous awards, Subhedar participated in shows across India and the globe.

Using vibrant colours to capture common people on canvas, the colourful exaggeration of human forms gave a caricaturish aura to his works. Since he was from Gulbarga, he painted different types of South Indian faces. In a career spanning four decades, Subhedar's works are naturally varied and immensely interesting.

Late artist Gopal Subhedar's works titled Preserving the Legacy can be viewed at Jehangir Art Gallery, 161-B, MG Road, Kala Ghoda from September 3 to 9, 11 am - 7 pm.
