Hi! Im posting pictures from the Kallio district at Helsinki in this thread.

Im starting with pictures from the Hakaniemi area , where i live. Hakaniemi is another commercial area with the center (kluuvi-kamppi) in downtown-area. It´s like Amsterdam having it´s Dam square and Leidseplein areas, Helsinki has Kluuvi and Hakaniemi, or Hakis (or Hagis) as we say it :)

Ok.. Kallio is a fabulous district in Helsinki. The people are cool ordinary people who have learned that almost anything could happen in Kallio. It´s a place of street life, cheap pubs (trend & and not that trendy :)), cheap food, cheap products, pornostores and striptease :). Kallio is an old workers area and still is but it´s getting more more posh all the time. Young people, students, workers, artists, musicians, hippies, punks, activists, senior citizens, gays and lesbians live there. Etno people and lots of etnofoodmarkets. Kallio is a bit more crimy than the heartcenter, but im sure you would be fine without mugged or robbed because most crimes done here are illegal substances-related crimes if passing out to the street in drunk is not counted.

Ok to the pictures..

As i wrote first pictures from Hakaniemi, the south-Kallio.

Old Elanto-building:

Bank buildings and Roundhouse build in the 70´s:

Arena-house, named after are comedy theater still running in the building.

It was saved in the 60´s demolishing of old Helsinki only because it filled it´s space in it´s triangle-shape block so well.

The Round house, we like it but we also admit that the Jugend castle that was situated at the same place was nicer.

Repair going on (done now).

Old Market hall "Hakaniemenhalli"

Hakaniemenhalli viewed from the market square:

Siltasaari, few blocks of houses in the back of the Bank buildings and Elanto building:

That´s it this time. Im posting more later with look tho the mid and north Kallio.

Ah, it's my rare good fortune to be able to welcome TWO Finns to the forum at the same time! :) :cheers1:

Zenfi, are you Oberleutnant's neighbor? He moved to Kallio last year & has shown us his district of Helsinki.

Thank you for this thread! :applause: You introduce and describe things very nicely. :eek:kay:

@both of you: be sure to go to this thread to announce your presence here. You want that dot representing HKI to become bigger, right? :)

WOW ! Nice pics from the Hakaniemi Square. It's a shame they destroyed most of the original square in the 60's. :(

It´s on top of the bus lane and it means that during 9 am to 3 pm the bus lane can droven with other vehicles as well. In brackets it means saturdays and the otherone is for weekdays. Sundays are marked with red letters and brackets but there´s no rule for sundays at that lane.

Welcome! :) And do stop by at Talo as well.

Kallio ain't the prettiest district in Helsinki by far, but it's relaxed and has a great urban atmosphere. It doesn't matter what you look like or what you do. You're "accepted" by everyone there. Now, when the streets are lively and full of different sorts of people (aformentioned students, "stylish rich kids", old people, tattooed biker-like people, etc) and customers sit outside bars, enjoying their drinks -- it's fantastic! Architecturally kinda ugly, perhaps.

Yeah, it's not a district without certain problems, but pros certainly outweigh cons, despite all my criticism before (it has had the questionable of honour to be featured in threads and posts where I've wanted to show that not all districts are like the downtown ;)). It's definitely not boring place, like some of the other inner city districts outside downtown.

Really nifty pic

Looking forward to seeing northern Kallio

In the last post I really tried to make the area look as bad as possible. ;)

Your right, but we have to live with it. Although Kallio has few pearls and quite a lot nice architecture, it´s ruined with some really bad stuff. Like 2. Linja is so ugly looking.

Thanks for the links, i´ll check em.

Thanks. I like these massive and grand looking buildings. And probably it`s one of the coolest district in Helsinki, it seems so...

There´s been some small changes/renovations in Hakaniemi area and there´s still some about to come. Like a while ago after a long fight between the market sellers of the market square and the City officials, the market square finally got underground garbagetanks that work with a lift. Other market squares has had the for a long time.

The buildings around the market square has just recently been under repair or are goingt to be repaird. Arenatalo and the building where McD is under repair now. Siltasaarenkatu is going to get big changes. Metro entrances will be moved inside the buildings away from the street into two shopping centers. Hopefully a lane for bikers fill be added. It´s a complete mess now with all the busses dropping and taking people and bikers and pedestrians using the same space.

@ Muulio
Those pictures where taken with Canon G5.
