Kandovan is an extraordinary village located on the steep mountain flank of Sabalan, northwest of Iran, 60 kilometers away from Tabriz.

Kandovan village is well known for its exquisite rocky architecture which is made by volcanic activities. The inhabitants have managed to carve their houses out of the huge rocks; that is to carve kitchen, hall, and pen out of stone and to make windows for the rooms and later, to decorate them with colorful glasses.

In one word, the village structure is incredibly beautiful.

Kandovan is home to 670 people whose main occupations are agriculture and animal husbandry. It is believed that people who were fleeing from Mongol invaders first came to this village for refuge and then settled here for good.

There are also 4 inns for visitors to stay in, the most famous one is Hotel Kandovan.

A Cliff Hotel to be Opened in the Village of Kandovan

The five star cliff hotel of Kandovan will be
inaugurated in this village in September
2006.

Tehran, 12 August 2006 (CHN Foreign Desk) -- The first hotel of Kandovan cliff village which will be the first cliff hotel in Iran will be opened in September 2006.

According to Mehdi Jahangiri, managing director of Iran’s Tourism Development Organization, Kandovan cliff hotel is the first of its kind in Iran and the second in the world after Turkey.

“Two months ago, I paid a visit to Tabriz together with the deputy director of Iran’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization. During this trip we noticed that those cliff houses in Kandovan village that are in possession of the Organization enjoy a great potential to be turned into a hotel. Later we dispatched a team of experts from Iran’s Tourism Development Organization to the area to prepare the plan for this project. We have not estimated the expenses yet; however, the beauty and the unique characteristics of this hotel are worth the investment, “said Jahangiri.

Kandovan Village is situated 65 kilometers south of Tabriz, East Azarbaijan province, and dates back to at least 800 years ago. Locating in a cliff area, this village enjoys a unique architectural style. At first glance at this village, one sees some sharp conical diggings with a hole on their surface. Inside each cone, some rooms can be seen which were used as dining room, kitchen, storage place and even stable. In addition to residential houses, two mosques with stone pillars and also more than a hundred barns have been dug in the cones. Each cone is consisted of two to four floors.

Inauguration of this hotel is an important initiative in attracting tourists to this part of the country.

Iran's jewel in the rocks, Kandovan

By Tamara Ebrahimpour, Press TV, Tehran

Iran's Kandovan with its many geographical and natural features is one of the most magnificent tourist attractions in the world.

The village which dates back to the time of the Mongol invasion, is located approximately 60 kilometers southwest of the city of Tabriz, adorning the northern slopes of a valley at the foothills of Mount Sahand.

The name Kandovan comes from the old term "Kandou jan". "Kand" meaning village and "Jan" meaning existence.

Kandovan's exceptional beauty lies in its fabulous 3000 year-old rocky settlements, which are carved into the mountain and are reminders of Sahand's volcanic eruptions from the early tertiary period to the early quaternary period.

Stone houses usually have 2-3 floors.

Eroded by flowing waters, the stones have turned into cones. The troglodyte homes, carved into the rocks usually have two, three or four floors.

The first floor is used as a stable, the second and third floors as living areas and the fourth floor as a warehouse.

Windows are decorated with colorful glass and entrances are made of one single piece of rock, no more than 160cm high.

Most houses face southward so their inhabitants can enjoy sunlight during the day. They are cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

People in Kandovan mostly live on their income from selling dairy products, meat, wool, honey, handcrafts and dried vegetables.

A river flowing down Sahand peaks passes through the valley, creating a number of natural springs. These mineral water sources were traditionally used to treat various ailments.

Remains of similar rocky architecture can be found in Italy, Afghanistan, Greece, Peru, Latin America and China, but Kandovan is a rare example as it still serves as a human settlement.

A living example of human adaptation to exceptionally unusual natural surroundings, the scenic beauty of Kandovan attracts some 300,000 tourists every year.

Kandovan's five-star cliff hotel is the third of its kind in the world.

i suggest renaming this thread to kandovan village(with some short explanations).opening a new thread isnt logical since kandovan is a small place while it deserves to have a topic for itself imo

i'd like to add sth: in an old iranian myth there was a person named "farhad" who had to dig some mountains to proove his love to a lady.on the welcome sign of kandovan village it says sth like "these people were real 'farhad's"
