Hi Friends,

I sensed that there is no discussion about Kasaragod area here. With the newly established central university, I thought it is time to start a new thread here.

Please contribute.

Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod

The Central University of Kerala is one of the 15 central universities approved by the central Govt. recently.

It started functioning in a temporary building at Nayanmarmoola, 5km from Kasaragod town.

See the web site of the university for more info.

Hi. I am from kasargod. But exact location is not clear yet. Does any one know. :)
I would wish that it be on the sea side. We don't have many academic campuses with a sea view, though we have a long coast line. It is a real pity!!

I don't think its safe to be around sea side..since a institute of this caliber has to remain for quite long (say more than 100 yrs)...is the land around sea side safe for next 100 yrs :)

We have quite a few institutes (I mean outside Kerala) on the sea side. We have TIFR, pondicherry central university etc on the coast.

Please post some pictures of the Kasaragod town if you already have them. Thanks.

Hi Babu,

Nice start.

But little bit jealous too, as you took the chance from me. I was planning to start one. Any how no worries. I will share & contribute what all informations I do have on Kasaragod.

BTW, Sanju what was wrong with the spelling? Was it already corrected?
KASARAGOD is the correct spelling. But in KSRTC, they sometimes write as Kasarkode.

My first visit to the town of Kasaragod was in 1979 (I think December), while I was an 8th standard student. (I bet many of the forumers here have not been born then). I was a represesentative of the Trivandrum District & attended the First State Campooree of the Bharat Scouts & Guides. Being the first event that was happening in the state and also as it was happening after the National Jampooree that was held at Chennai Marai Malar Nagar a few months back, Kasaragod Campooree attracted wide media attention. The people of Kasaragod town were fully enthralling and activiley involved in the programme.

There was a Campooree Special Train from Trivandrum Central to Kasaragod (and back after 10 days), just to collect the Campers right from Trivandrum to Kannur (Nobody worried about the pitlines !!!). Kasaragod was part of Kannur then. (Wayanad was born in 1980 and Pathanamthitta is still younger, I mean the youngest among the Districts of Kerala).

The event lasted for 10 days during the Christmas-New Year Vacation and was held at the Government College grounds. The train journey from Trivandrum to Kasaragod itself was excting for all the scouts & guides and to their masters and captains as well.

Later on, I visited Kasaragod in 1986, as a part of my All Kerala Study Tour and again in 1992, while I was returning from Mangalore by bus. The town had changed a lot by then and was still contuing to change a lot. But I could not see the present day busy town during those days. It was so pleasant.

In 1994, I landed at Kasaragod again, but with a different assignment. I was working at Palakkad as a District Officer and suddenly I got orders to set up a District Office at Kasaragod and also to Commission the Silk Factory at Mylatty (Uduma). I was quite surprised to see the changes that was happening in the town. As it was as additional task, I used to visit Kasaragod very frequently - may be I stay at Kasaragod for 2 or 3 days once in a week.

The Kerala State SIDCO was constructing the Silk Factory Complex and adjacent to that the KDP (Kasaragod Diesel Plant) was under construction. As the facilities were limited at Mylatty / Chattanchaal where exactly the complex was coming up, I was staying at the PWD Rest House and commuting to the Complex site. Most of these journeys were in a bullet motor cycle, till another 4 wheeler was alloted to me from Kannur (on sharing basis). These journeys between Kasaragod and Mylatty were enchanting during those days. I used to travel via the coastal road via Bekal too.

At night sometime, when we get bored of the work me and my associates used to go to some of the Hotels / Restaurants out there at Chattanchaal. Chattanchaal though was a very small junction, had three or four classey restaurants to cater to the needs of the "Mumbai Buses". It was real fun to wacth these buses to and from Mumbai. The restaurant people used to charge twice or thrice the actual charges to the Mumbai bus travellers.

The Hostel of the Kasaragod Engineering College was functioning at Chattanchaal on the first floor of a shopping complex. Some bank too had a branch above that.

The District Office was inaugurated by 1995 and the Silk Factory Complex was fully operational by 1996. In 1997, my term as Special Officer ended. May I request some of the Kasaragodians here to visit this place one day and to post pictures of the Mylatty Complex ? And what is the status of the Kasaragod Diesel Plant ? I think, it was RPG group who were building that utility facility for the KSEB.

My last visit to Kasaragod was in 2004.

I have many things to tell about the food of Kasaragod & also about the places like Bekal, Ranigiri etc. May be next time.

@Jaleel Ha ..Ha..Ha, I just thought that Kasaragod is already in the educational map of India and so we must provide inputs about the area to the world.

Nice if you could share some old pictures of Kasaragod from your visits in the 80s,90s!!
