Presenter Suzanne Virdee in shock departure from BBC Midlands Today
by Chris HenwoodMar 29 2012

MIDLANDS Today presenter Suzanne Virdee has announced her shock departure from the show.

The Solihull-born 42-year-old is quitting the BBC’s news and current affairs programme and said today would be her last day.

Mrs Virdee, who joined the Midlands Today presentation team in April 2001, said she had been due to sign a five-month contract, but decided to leave “due to circumstances beyond my control”.

“It is with great sadness that I will not be continuing my long association with Midlands Today,” she said, refusing to comment further on her resignation.

“However, due to circumstances beyond my control it is not possible for me to sign a proposed five-month contract.”

Mrs Virdee became a journalist as a trainee reporter at the age of 18 with the Solihull Times.

After qualifying as a journalist she worked for Central Television and went back to newspapers, taking up posts with the Sunday Mercury and the Birmingham Mail. She then moved into radio with BBC WM, before working for Central Television again.

Mrs Virdee took over as the Midlands Today main presenter in 2002 having started on late night bulletins.

“I have had many happy years co-presenting and I’m proud to have helped make the programme one of the most watched regional news programmes in the country,” she said.

“It’s been an honour to bring the news to the region where I was born and brought up and I really am extremely grateful for that opportunity and the support I have had from viewers. Working with my dear friend Nick Owen has been a pleasure and us being honoured with best presenter awards was an unexpected highlight.

“During my time at Midlands Today I have worked with some superb colleagues, many of whom have become firm friends.”

A BBC spokesman declined to comment on Mrs Virdee’s decision to leave.

“We are sorry that Suzanne has decided to leave Midlands Today,” said the spokesman. “We wish her all the best for the future.”

Suzanne Virdee reveals the real reason why she quit Midlands Today

The 42-year-old says she has lost her love for Birmingham and plans to move to Manchester

Ms. Virdee, who grew up in the West Midlands, said today: "I can see why everyone says that Manchester is now our second city - it's a much bigger and better city than Birmingham and I simply cannot wait to move up north. The people there are just so much nicer and the buildings are far more delightful. Bye-bye Brum!"

Fellow Midlands Today presenter Nick Owen refused to comment.
