The capitol of the Upper Sileasian Metropolitan union Polands largest Urban agllomaration with 2.7 million inhabitants. Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union, USMU (Polish: Górnośląski Związek Metropolitalny) is a proposed union of 14 neighbouring cities in the Silesian Voivodeship, Poland: Bytom, Chorzów, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Gliwice, Jaworzno, Katowice, Mysłowice, Piekary Śląskie, Ruda Śląska, Siemianowice Śląskie, Sosnowiec, Świętochłowice, Tychy and Zabrze.
Its combined population as of 2007 was 2.1 million, within a greater urban area (conurbation) of 2.8 million (the Upper Silesian Industry Area).
The aim of the union is the creation of a strong metropolitan center with pooled resources, an internationally competitive profile and unified management of common infrastructure.
The intent to form the union was formally stated January 9, 2006 in Świętochłowice by the assembled presidents of the participating cities, who signed a declaration to this effect. As of 2007, after the adoption of the enabling laws by the constituent City Councils, the union is awaiting official recognition (registration) by Poland's Ministry of Interior and Administration (Polish: MSWiA).

^^ Not many people do like it but i think Katowice has its charm with all the Modernism, Art novue, new buildings and the commieblocks all mixed together  its crazy on one street you can have to beautiful old 18/19th centurary buildings opposite some modernism from the 1920s with a new bank in the middle and a commie block just to top it off. Any way Katowice has huge potential to become a modern town...all they need is an efficient transportation system those trams are awfully slow...
PS;those Star shaped commieblocks are probably the only commieblocks that are intersting...
