^^^ yeah, the number of residents decreases quite rapidly in the whole country:(

just Vilnius manages to keep a positive balance, because of small villages that were linked the latest years.

EDIT: actually there are many positive prognoses about LT future, 'cause many people, who had emigrated from Lithuania some years ago - are coming back, because of a super big economic growth at last period;)

Wrong - the population of Vilnius is increasing without any "added villages". Population of Vilnius increases because of the fact that people from other places in Lithuania move to live in Vilnius. Btw, quite big number of people come to live in Vilnius from Kaunas too. Also, the region of Kaunas is not the biggest and is not over a million - it is 685 766 (quite far from million). The region of Vilnius is 848563. Data taken from: http://www.std.lt/web/main.php?parent=980

Yes, populations changed like this for Baltic states (period 1989-2000 for Estonia and Latvia; period 1989-2001 for Lithuania):
Estonia: -12%
Latvia: -11%
Lithuania: -5%

sad... but we almost got a positive mark in Tallinn at the beginning of the year... the city governement and the state now offer "huge" revenues to families (young families) with children.. we are doing all we can to turn the tide... on a positive note... tallinns is on the rising (last year +14 000!IIRC)

One interesting thing is that Lithuania experiences a disurbanization when people leave the cities or more people are born there. Not sure if moving to suburbs is counted in it :|

City population change (2004) -11916
Rural population change (2004) +2304

The statistics on city population change

change/city/came/left
(+540)Vilnius 8860 8320
(-948)Siauliai 1995 2943
(-1134)Panevezys 1568 2702
(-1176)Klaipeda 2978 4154
(-4035)Kaunas 4405 8440

That's awesome, I absolutely love Kaunas. Too bad about the population, though :(
it could look tragic just from a first spot;) as Mantaz showed - Kaunas has negative balance (-4035). 8440 residents left town (perhaps major part to suburbs), but 4405 came. so it is not sort of just running away from the town:) in addition, Kaunas is quite a big city among others in S&B region, so those 4035 people are not that much. it contains 1,09% of all those who live there.

whereas Klaipeda, has -0,6% nagative balance, Vilnius - +0,009%.

nevertheless, predictions about the number of residents of Lithuania are quite optimistical
