THE Gauteng infrastructure MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza,has given new hope for Kempton Park Hospital to be reopened. She told*Eyewitness News*the hospital would either be refurbished or rebuilt.Mayathula-Khoza visited the abandoned facility for the first time on Thursday. She told EWN: “The minute I entered at the gate, I couldn’t believe what I saw. I am seeing it for the first time, but what is good about it is that there is a plan already from the Gauteng government to either refurbish, renovate or to build it from scratch.”This*could cost more than R1 billion, and while her department has assessed the situation, it is ultimately up to the health department to decide on the way forward. While a hospital in this area could take the pressure off other facilities, it may only be operational in 2019.

A fence has been erected around the whole site -for what I assume to be security reasons- will try to get some shots later today. Grass has been cut for the first time in years. There isn't any other activity, but I'll update with news when I can.:)

The long-awaited reopening of the KPH has been delayed by a further two years and is now only scheduled to take place in 2017. Delays in the reopening of this critical healthcare facility for Gauteng’s East Rand is unacceptable. * In response to my questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Health MEC Hope Papo has indicated that the project is still only in the planning phase (Please reply to this email to request a copy of the reply). There is no activity on the site nearly six months after the construction and repairs at the Kempton Park Hospital were due to begin and more than four and a half years after Premier Nomvula Mokonyane promised the reopening. * This is yet another one of Premier Nomvula Mokonyane's unfulfilled promises. She is now finishing her term without having delivered on this. The DA in Gauteng will push the Health Department to accelerate the process of refurbishing and reopening the hospital. * The people of Ekurhuleni cannot afford further delays in the reopening of the Kempton Park Hospital which will provide much needed additional healthcare services to the region’s already overcrowded facilities.
