^^ With all due respects waltjie, I wouldn't have expected those airlines to come to KSIA anyway. British Airways is in a spot of bother and may not want to adversely affect Comair's operations (wonder if there's some Comair influence in that?), I doubt that there's sufficient demand for Hong Kong at this stage and there'll be even less demand for Istanbul, and Durban is on the wrong side of South Africa for the American carriers so they would almost always choose JNB and CPT over DUR.

What would be more realistic is a different carrier operating UK flights (where's flightplan these days?) and maybe a Far Eastern destination if we're lucky (Singapore?). The infrastructure is now in place - now the real work, marketing Durban to the world, must begin.

@Switch, I'm pretty sure that there is a viewing deck, judging by external photos - maybe you just missed it when you were there?
Well there you have it. TNW for April 14 has the likes of British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta and Turkish Airlines stating that they will not consider the new DUR airport as a destination.
Wow hardly the biggest surprise mate. BA have major issues so no surprises there, cant barely afford anything at the moment and would rather keep propping up dear old comair on domestic connections anyway. Cathay Pacific often struggle on the Joburg route and there are far better places to arrive into asia (Singapore with better connections). And Delta and Turkish airlines are of no significance to Durban anyway - Delta pulled out of CT and Turkish serve a very niche market. They both dont need more than one entry to SA.

If this statement had said Qatar, Singapore, SAA, Jet/Kingfisher, Virgin then i would have pricked my ears. But we were not expecting any of those airlines to fly to Durban in the first place.
was thinking exactly the same...

on the topic of the viewing deck, they also said on the radio today that there isnt a viewing deck which the durbanites weren't to happy about, anyone can elaborate?
We dont need them, just give us Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, Etihad, Virgin & SAA.... maybe QantARSE We'll be happy with that :D
They are using the same flight schedule as DIA currently has. So first arriving flight on any giving Saturday will be the same for KSIA. Official openig day is 10 May.

As far as I have heard there are no special flights unless SAA get some A340 there. Emirates have not announced anything but it wouldn't suprise me if they get an A380 for either day to make a statement. Would be a great move if they do.

Still trying to decided if I want to wait all night for the first flight because there is no viewing deck! Might find myself atthe toll gate to get some photos!
Guess you guys are talking about first scheduled flights landing, with pax.

Regarding the aircraft moving over from DIA to KSIA, I guess they'll all move one by one soon after they finished their days work, not all one after the other after a specific time.
Airlink J-41 usually arrives back at DUR at 13:00 from MPM, then it's finished for the day...so that might be the first one moving over...then later the Airlink ERJ, SAX Dash8-300 and SAX CRJs (all guess before 20:00), before SAA, Kulula, Comair and 1Time finished later in the evening.
Re: #Dube Tradeport & King Shaka International Airport - Durban [Part 3]

Probably will happen as flight are finished for the day.

Regarding the viewing deck. I ask while I was on the tour as I didn't see any signs. I think that room that looks like a viewing deck is offices. Might be ground control!?

This has to be a viewing deck, i cant see it being offices at all...

Sorry for butting in but I enjoy the discussions you all have been having. It's interesting to see how accurate some guesses have been! :)

The picture shows the viewing deck from Airline Offices. It has to be said that the picture was taken in 2009.

The airline offices have since been completed and handed over to ACSA who are already operating from there. The majority of the offices are situated behind where the camera man was standing and I must admit looks perfect for use.

I manage the signage implementation at the airport and have updated pics I can show... I just don't know how to upload them here??!?!!?

If you guys have any questions, I'll try answer wherever possible.

Kindest Regards,

Michael

Zuma to officially open King Shaka airport
April 13 2010 at 02:02PM

President Jacob Zuma will officially open the new state of the art King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal on May 8, the province's economic development MEC said on Tuesday.

The R8-billion airport would start operating on May 1, but it would be officially opened by Zuma on May 8, MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu told members of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature in Pietermaritzburg.

"On May 8 history will be made when our president officiates at the opening of this state of the art airport which has superior facilities and a longer runway compared to the old Durban International Airport," he said.

The old Durban International Airport would be used during the World Cup then decommissioned.

"Pre-opening trials and tests of facilities continue to be undertaken to ensure that, come the decommissioning of the old airport and commissioning of the new facility, it is all systems go," he said.

He said the government's challenge was to attract more international airlines to use the airport. - Sapa

See now that I really don't get....

How can someone open the airport after it has been officially running for a week?!?!?

Thank you Roman! I will try uploading tonight!
Waltjie

Waltjie I get the distinct feeling you are either:
1. Put out by our new KSIA
2. Do not want to see any increase in air traffic to Durban
3. Worried that some traffic will leave JHB.

But looking back at your posts you appear to be opposed to anything to do with airport?

I have not seen ONE complimentary statement or observation from you. I have seen comments like Nasty pillars having a "friend" who was doing the ILS system who said it would not be ready (well we have a big problem then becuase it opens in 2 weeks time or is it wishfull thinking on your side?)
And your last post (which was no big surprise to anybody on here)

So what is the problem with KSIA? I do not see anybody else on here dissing JHB or CPT but you only appear to post negative comments about our brand new gleaming airport!!:eek:hno:
^^ He works for one of the major airlines operating out of JNB and thus has a bit of a vested interest in keeping international traffic centered there. Let's just leave things at that. :)

Interested in seeing the updated signage pics!
Can I just say that KSIA is STUNNING! All other South African airports will need to undergo serious facelifts to compare in the slightest!

It seems Durban has chosen the best in architecture for both airport and stadium!

I'm lucky to have been involved in both!
Great. lets get those photos!!!
What would be more realistic is a different carrier operating UK flights (where's flightplan these days?) and maybe a Far Eastern destination if we're lucky (Singapore?). The infrastructure is now in place - now the real work, marketing Durban to the world, must begin.
What I'd like to see is an Air Asia- style carrier offering flights from London Stansted to DUR. There were rumours of this last year but they came to nothing. It's a shame that none of the European or SA low cost carriers operate long haul flights, unlike the Asian LCCs. I'm British, live in the UK, but my wife is from Durban and we head down regularly. STN is the 2nd closest airport to us, after NWI.

New international services that might work for DUR:
- London, daily
- Indian ocean holiday flights, eg. Maldives, once or twice per week
- an Indian destination
- an Australian destination (Perth?)
- Amsterdam with KLM (wishful thinking!)

signol
All I can say is that I'm sorry! I have a few here but never quite thought of taking 'pretty' pictures that aren't sign related! :)

I'm heading to the airport now to check on the guys and will take a stack of decent ones. Sorry all.

In the meanwhile, I have the Drop Off area - taken at night:

This is the glass facade looking into the Check in areas in departures:

A panoramic of the check in counters - which actually looks weird:

International Check-In counters:

Domestic Check-In counters:

The airport as seen from the runway:

and another:

What I'll do is, as the airport looks so stunning at night, I'll take pictures from one end to the other to show on here and post either tomorrow or tomorrow evening.

Sorry again for the delay!
No worries about the delay :)

Those photos are awesome enough.

I love that little blue accent light on the trusses... its very cool
