Tuesday, 30 November, 2010 – Kingston, Jamaica: Digicel today broke ground on its new “green” global headquarters on the waterfront in downtown Kingston.

At a ceremony to mark the occasion, Digicel Chairman and Founder, Denis O’Brien was joined by Digicel Group CEO, Colm Delves and Digicel Jamaica CEO, Mark Linehan – as well as the Prime Minister, the Honourable Bruce Golding, the Mayor of Kingston, Desmond McKenzie, Members of the Government and Members of the Opposition.

Digicel staff gets first look at new headquarters as August move-in date nears

With construction seemingly on track to meet its August timeline, telecommunications giant Digicel has started to familiarise its staff with the downtown Kingston building that will be their new home.

During a tour of the nearly completed facility last week, staff members were upbeat as they had their first look at the 11-storey building under construction.

Finally - Digicel Moves Into New HQ

Telecommunications giant Digicel has started the trek into its headquarters in downtown Kingston with most employees expected to be in their new house by weekend.

The company had initially planned to move into its multi-million dollar 11-storey building last August and started familiarisation tours with its staff.

But the move was delayed for reasons the company has not made public.

However, last week staff were told to get ready for the move and yesterday chief executive officer of the company, Andy Thorburn, took The Gleaner on a tour of the now-ready facility and indicated that staff began moving in last Tuesday.

"By the end of the week, they'll be fully in," said Thorburn as he noted that the project was completed within budget.

The billing, human resources, technical, information technology, finance and customer care departments were already in the building yesterday.

The remaining departments, including their group offices, are slated to complete the move by the end of the week.

"Seventy-five per cent of persons who worked on the project came from the surrounding communities," said Thorburn of the energy-efficient premises, which used approximately 25 to 30 per cent of locally sourced material in construction.

Digicel Brings State-Of-The-Art To Downtown

THERE IS a new attraction in downtown Kingston that residents there are trying to keep secret. It's the Digicel store and customer care centre, which opened just about a month ago on the ground floor of the telecommunications firm new headquarters near the waterfront.

The state-of-the-art store is a treat for shoppers, and scores of persons go there almost daily to check their e-mail, update their Facebook pages or send a tweet, all for free.

"It has basically been a soft opening, but somehow word gets around and the crowds have been coming in particularly at lunchtime or at the end of the day," said Patrick King, head of consumer sales at Digicel.

"The good thing about this store is that it is a full-service outlet ... so any issue that you have, any information you need, you can get it here. If you want a phone to buy, you can get it in the retail outlet or any problem you can get it resolved in customer care," added King.

The fully electronic store is paperless with all the information available at the push of a button or the touch of a screen.

"In our other stores, we have what is called a descriptor card attached to the phones, but here we have an electronic descriptor card. It gives you the price, and if you press another button, it gives you the features. You can also touch the screen and compare it to other handsets and you can see a video showing you all the features," said King.
