Comprehensive Plan of Kinshasa 2025

Facing a huge informal growth since 20 years, the Congolese capital will have the most rapid urban population growth of the world in the next years, according to UN statistics. From 8 to 17 million people in 2025, Kinshasa needs urgently a Comprehensive Plan that is able to answer as well as possible at the present and future needs of its young population.

In this context, Citilinks and AEC Congonext are presenting together since 2007 some keys of a balanced urban development of the City of Kinshasa.

KINRAPID Bus Rapid Transit network (Kinshasa)


KINrapid, a public transportation network adapted to the City of Kinshasa

The BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) network named KINrapid and proposed by Citilinks and AEC Congonext aims to realize a complete network of bus lines with own ways through the agglomeration of Kinshasa.
Major key of a balanced development of the city, the KINrapid project offers to Kinshasa inhabitants a new accessibility to their neighbourhoods, adapted to the size of the city, and providing high-capacity busses riding on own ways free of traditional traffic jams.

By the way, KINrapid stations are designed to be strong cultural landmarks for Kinshasa and its inhabitants. These stations are organized with a central platform and two double busways, like a subway station, but with realization costs 14 times less important.

The architectural design aims also to integrate local art. This low carbon public transportation project is exhibited at the African Pavilion of World Expo 2010 of Shanghai until October 31st.

Boulevard Lumumba (14.5 km) under expension to an 8 lanes Boulevard.



Liberation Avenue. (13 km) under expansion as well to a 6 lane Avenue.

Poids Louds Avenue (12 km) Under expansion. (Not sure how many lanes , but possibly 6 lanes as well).

This plan is a an independent Congolese gentleman who designed it. he presented it to officials. But they are pig heads. No one know what they have in mind or how serious they took this guy.

Decent leaders would have been delighted by this project and they should have implemented it right now as they are widening the Long Boulevards as you see above.


There would be a 3 km flyover of 4 lanes in one direction., that will be the only flyover in the whole city.

Traffic jams can get insane . so this project must be taken very serious. no hope with these shythead government.

There are also 2 lines existing Urban Rail thats under plans for modernization. more lines will need to be added though possibly2 or 3 more lines in the most populated areas.

Number of cars growing in Kinshasa is high, traffic jams at rush hour are in sane. a place of 25 km (from airport to CBD) supposed to take 25-30 minutes, but at rush hour taking 2-3 hours. This is on Lumumba Boulevard (which is under going expansion from 4 lanes to 8 lanes )this will easy Traffic, but until BRT and the Rail are operational , Traffic will only get worst.

so whats this kampala plan then? Subsaharan Africa is going BRT crazy. It will be interesting to see which cities will progress from this and start light-railway/tram/urban rail and then the "holy grail"of public transport- a metro system. My money is on Lagos.

Me as well,my money on Lagos. But that depends if Lagos governor Fashola is still around, not sure what will happen if he is no longer the governor.

As for Kinshasa's Urban Rail. there have been talks in the last 2 years about it modernization (supposedly , Trammway system).

in Kampala the Uganda government has created Greater Kampala Transport Master Plan. they are to build 4 flyovers across the city. and the southern by-pass. a brt and lrt . they will also redevelop 62 junctions,27 railway crossings,600km of gravel roads will be sealed and 60km resealed each year and 240km of roads maintained each year.it is to expected start by 2012 and will be completed in 2023.the brt is expected to be completed by 2018 it will cater for greater kampala(entebbe,mukono,wakiso and Kampala city,kira.)

...and I thought Nairobi's traffic jams were were the worst in the great lakes region. I think Kin is lucky to have wide roads. Something that many cities in the region sorely lack.
