men fighting before bullfight - Pemba Tanzania

Bullfights were introduced in Pemba during the portuguese colonization. They take place during great celebrations, like here, on New Year's Day. There is no killing, the zebu bull has no horns and is held by a long rope. The bravest just demonstrate their skill in avoiding the animal. The show starts with ritual sticks duels between farmers.
