Also, The NH numbers are listed in increasing order.

1. NH - 66 (Originally starts from Panvel in Maharashtra), KA/KL Border at Thalappadi, Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Ponnani, Edappally, Aroor, Cherthala, Alappuzha, Kollam, Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram, KL/TN Border (terminates near Kanyakumari in Tamilnadu).
   
2. NH - 85 Starts from Ernakulam (NH - 66), Muvattupuzha, Devikulam, KL/TN Border (terminates at Tondi Point in Tamilnadu).
   
3. NH - 183 (Originally starts from Dindigul in Tamilnadu), TN/KL Border at Kumili, Peerumed, Kanjirappally, Kottayam, Adoor and terminates near Kottarakkara (NH - 744).
   
4. NH - 544 (Originally starts from Salem in Tamilnadu), TN/KL Border at Walayar, Palakkad, Thrissur and terminates at Edappally.
   
5. NH - 744 (Originally starts from Thirumangalam in Tamilnadu), TN/KL Border at Kottavasal, Punalur, Kottarakara and terminates near Kollam (NH - 66).
   
6. NH - 766 Starts from Kozhikode, Kalpetta, KL/KA Border (terminates near Kollegal in Karnataka).
7. 
   [*]NH - 966 Starts from Kozhikode (near Feroke) and terminates near Palakkad (NH - 544).
   
8. NH - 966A Starts from Kalamassery (NH - 544), crosses NH - 66 and terminates at Vallarpadam.
   
9. NH - 966B Starts from NH -66 and terminates at Willington Island in Ernakulam.

The nomenclature followed here is very simple.
Here, the numbering is starting from North to South. NH -66 Starts from Panvel (North) and terminates at Kanyakumari (South). The NH -966 is the offshoot from NH -66.The other offshoots from NH -66 are NH -166,NH -366,NH -566,NH -766.Since the number ends at ‘9’.The next offshoot is numbered with A & B,ie; NH -966A & NH -966 B.
NH -544 starts from Salem (North) and terminates at Edappally (South). And it is the offshoot from NH -44 so is the odd number 5 added. Same is the case with NH -744.
The NH -183 is the offshoot from NH -83.Also,it terminates at Kottarakara ie; with NH -744.It can’t be extended unless another route is declared as NH further South from this point.
The NH -85 is the West-East Highway. Hence the number.ie; Starting from West and terminating at the East.
