Kolhapur: Cargo Services will now be launched from Kolhapur Airport, which has been providing regular passenger flights for the last two years. The transport is expected to start from next Thursday. Up to 500 kg of cargo will be transported by the passenger plane itself. This will give a boost to the development of the district.

For the last two years, regular passenger flights have been operating from Kolhapur Airport under the flight plan. The airline is getting a huge response from passengers. Kolhapur is the first city to connect the three state capitals by air in a flight plan. As a result, the service will start on another route from Kolhapur and studies are underway by various companies.

The 'cargo' service will now be launched from Kolhapur, which has a huge opportunity for passenger as well as freight. Preparations are underway. A study is being conducted by the Airports Authority of India's cargo class to find out what kind of cargo can be transported from Kolhapur and on which routes. In the first phase, the freight will be started from the passenger transport aircraft. It is expected to start from next Thursday. Separate cargo planes will also be used as freight increases.

Obstacles around Kolhapur airport block night landings

The approval for the night landing facility at the Kolhapur airport has hit a snag due to obstructions along the night landing zone. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has suggested that these obstructions be cleared. The night landing facility is required to ensure more airports are connected to the Kolhapur airport. Many airports do not have parking slots available during the day and they are ready to provide slots at night — this will facilitate flight services between Kolhapur and the other cities.

However, there are several obstructions. For instance, a study found a hilltop hamlet just outside the Kolhapur city obstructing vision during night landings. The entire hamlet needs to be relocated. Also, there are other obstructions such as a power station, several poles, an elevated water tank, mobile towers and several constructions. District guardian minister Satej Patil and MP Sanjay Mandlik surveyed the various localities around the airport a couple of times recently. Satej Patil said: “I have asked several departments to remove the obstructions as soon as possible. We are in discussion with the residents of the hamlet. They are being convinced to shift to another location. The authorities have been asked to prepare a plan to relocate the people and the utilities.”
