IU's edit:

Project Information:
Kolkata's airport is currently being upgraded in light of the booming air traffic in the Indian aviation. The modernization and expansion of the NSCB airport will be done by May 2011 and this will include the construction of a new terminal, extension of the second runway, taxiways amongst others.

Designed by RMJM, the new terminal will be able to handle 20 million passengers/annum which would be sufficient till 2015. Work has started on it and the terminal should open by May 2011.

The new terminal building will have an area of around 180,000 sq metres. 104 check-in counters, 44 immigration counters, 25 security gates, five conveyor belts and 15 aerobridges will be the other features of the airport post development.

Deep piling work for the integrated passenger terminal had begun in Nov 2008

The consultants for the modernization of this airport is a consortium of Indian firms partnering with Hong Kong’s RMJM and a Paris-based firm ADPI.

Work on nine domestic bays, three cargo bays and 11 additional parking bays has already started

2000 cr modernization plan for Kolkata airport

Hindu

New Delhi (PTI): The Airports Authority of India will upgrade the Kolkata and Chennai airports at a total cost of Rs 3,800 crore, which is scheduled to be completed by 2010-11.

"AAI would spend Rs 2,000 crore to modernise the Kolkata airport and Rs 1,800 crore for the Chennai airport. The modernisation process has to be completed by 2010-11," AAI Chairman K Ramalingam said here on Thursday.

At the Kolkata airport, a new runway would be constructed along the existing one. For Chennai airport, the existing cross runway would be operationalised and an additional runway would be built, Ramalingam said.

"The in-principle approval for the modernisation plans of the two airports has been given," he said, adding that the projects would be carried out solely by AAI.

AAI would also commission a new runway at the Delhi airport by September this year.

"A third runway would be commissioned by September along the two existing ones at the Delhi airport," he said.

Speaking at the inauguration of 'Aerodrome India 2008', Ramalingam said there was a need to build aviation infrastructure at faster rate to manage the traffic and build capacity at various airports and the projects are a part of that process.

He also said that efforts are being made to enhance non-traffic revenue to upgrade airport infrastructure.
Where do those five walkways from the terminal go? Just to the green area?
^^^Arjeet, the last picture you posted above isn't the rendering for the Kolkata airport. I believe its Chennais but not sure:
Thanks Kolkatausa - I have removed it.

Hope this gets built.
Its an underground parking lot with a green roof.

some info from my post on the Indian Skyscraper blog:

Just like Chennai, a new terminal building would be constructed here as well. After work finishes, Kolkata’s airport would be able to handle 20 million passengers/annum which would be sufficient till 2015.

Work on nine domestic bays, three cargo bays and 11 additional parking bays has already started along with construction of the new terminal building. In addition, a new ATC control tower is being built and automation being introduced in air traffic management and navigation. The new terminal building will have an area of around 180,000 sq metres. 104 check-in counters, 44 immigration counters, 25 security gates, five conveyor belts and 15 aerobridges will be the other features of the airport post development.

The airport itself looks awesome, ATC tower is futuristic and landscaping is pleasing.
but i don't like the way they designed the access roads. it will be a big blunder and stupidity if they go with this design.
i don't like the way the two roads merge at 90 degrees. it is absolutely ridiculous and will only create traffic problems. it defeats the purpose of having multilayer access design. they will most prolly need traffic light at the junction which will slow the traffic down. and it is rush hour then traffic might line up to the entrance even. if they don't have lights but have stop signs instead then it will be even worse. Desi public don't like stop and go... we are all go and stop for none..

either they need to built a bridge, or US interstate style merge and exit lane , or a circle as they did at HIAL..
As an architect, in my personal opinion, this will be the best "designed" Airport in India when it is constructed with Kochi coming in 2nd place
two simple questions:

Can all this be made with Rs. 200 Crores (USD 500 Million)?

Has this plan been finalized?
wow. look at the ATC :) couldn't have been better designed. as great as it gets.

The plan is final as much as I know, now all they need to do is get on with the job and they need to do it NOW to prevent escalations and meet the 2010-11 deadline. There was already some news of delay due to some logistics issues.

Let us be optimistic that AAI would do a great job here and in Chennai:)

AAI will be shelling out Rs.2000 Crores and not Rs.200 Cr
Kronik might be right. The rest of 1800 Crores can go into self rewarding AAI and other govt. babus. Some people might disagree and call it "Corruption". :)
AAI will be shelling out Rs.2000 Crores and not Rs.200 Cr
right, thats an obvious typo!

Ramkan, and you forget the 'contributions' to the party of the people.

but more seriously, I still think Rs. 2000 seems little for a project of this scale.

KolkataUSA, can you tell me where you got the picture in your #4 post. Looks like some architectural consultants website, and i'm really curious to know which one.

A unique airport for India - also havent seen anything quite like it elsewhere in the world too - using graphics based on a famous poetic script...
