BBD BAG

BBD Bag area. The Oldest CBD of the City, one of the oldest in the country. Formerly known as Dalhousie Square (names after Lord Dalhousie) it was rechristened BBD Bag (after 3 young martyrs of Freedom movement)

The Central waterbody, called Laldighi, right in the heart of BBD Bag. It is surrounded by several iconic structures like GPO, RBI, Writers Building, Royal Insurance Building & Telephone bhawan etc.

Jobe Charnock's church (Jobe Charnock was the founder of Kolkata in 1690), and a portion of Writers Building can be seen in this pic, which is on the northern side of BBD Bag

Brabourne Road, an important thoroughfare in the BBD BAG area. It houses mostly Govt PWD office buildings & Banks, built mostly in the '60s & 70's. Lately these buildings have undergone a makeover of sorts donning glass & aluminium facades, keeping up with modern times, I guess.

ESPLANADE - The City Centre

Esplanade, The heart of the City, constitute a part of Chowringhee area. It lies at the Northern part of Jawaharlal Nehru Road (considered one of the prime thoroughfares of the City).

Victoria House on C R Avenue, HQ of Calcutta Electric Supply Corp, an RPG group Co.

Structures like this have given the tag "City of Palaces" to Kolkata

Metropolitan Building on J L Nehru Rd - The Grand Edifice in a renovated avatar. The Gr floor houses a "Big Bazaar" store & several state cottage emporiums.


The Oberoi Grand on J L Nehru Road - The First Oberoi group hotel in the country & one of the finest. The Arcade is a retail hotspot.

New Market (Sir Stuart Hogg market), the oldest market place of Kolkata, in the Esplanade area. Pedestrians enjoy a stroll in the promenade in front of the market, which houses an underground car park (Simpark)

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU ROAD

Jawaharlal Nehru Road (formerly Chowringhee Road), is the most important north-south connecting road, and forms the integral part of the other CBD of Kolkata. It can be rightfully described as the cradle of Corporate Kolkata.

Near Chowringhee flyover, Park Street Xing. The tallest building in view is CIC.
