The Saudi Landbridge will transform the existing rail network in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ("KSA") into a world-class freight and passenger rail link across the country. It will have the capability to move large quantities of cargo over long distances at competitive rates and will offer safe and comfortable overland passenger transport.

The railway will connect the port cities of Jeddah, Dammam and Jubail and will pass through the capital city Riyadh and serve its dry port.

The project will involve:


1) Construction of a c. 950 km new line between Riyadh and Jeddah

2) Construction of a c. 115 km new line between Dammam and Jubail


Upgrade of the existing rail link between Riyadh and Dammam, including connection to the new Riyadh-Jeddah and Dammam-Jubail lines. Integration of the new lines with Jeddah Islamic Port, King Abdul Aziz Port, Dammam and Riyadh Dry Port

The KSA will grant concessions to the private sector for the construction and operation of the Saudi Landbridge via a Build Operate Transfer ("BOT") contract. This will be one of the largest BOT schemes ever undertaken in the region.

A consortium comprising UBS Investment Bank, The National Commercial Bank and SNCF International has been selected by Saudi Railways Organization ("SRO") to provide Financial and Technical Advisory Services for the Saudi Landbridge.

Pre-qualification of consortia for the project, which has the full support of the KSA, is expected to commence in the first half of 2005.



A large number of Umrah visitors and Hajj pilgrims travel between Makkah and Madinah every year, a number that is expected to grow as a result of the new rules greatly facilitating Hajj/Umrah visits. The Makkah Madinah Rail Link ("MMRL") will involve:

The project will involve:

1) Construction of a new line between Jeddah and Makkah

2) Construction of a new line between Jeddah and Madinah

3) Construction of a spur from the Jeddah-Madinah line to Yanbu


The project will provide a safe, fast, reliable and comfortable mode of transport for Umrah visitors and Hajj pilgrims travelling to Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah.

The KSA will grant concessions to the private sector for the construction and operation of the MMRL via a Build, Operate Transfer ("BOT") contract.

Pre-qualifying is slightly delayed. They were supposed to announce the qualified consortia last month, but they've pushed it back till January.

If this project is done, it will be a grand breakthrough in the Kingdom, which deserves this project.

Yeah we need such kinds of projects to build the infrastructure of the country. This is going to bring more competetion in the transportation sector and hopefully will bring other ticket prices down. Guys does any body know any companies bidding for the project?

Also, I think that it would be very good idea to consider building sort of mono-train or above-ground thingy as a means of trasportation within cities especially where needed like in Riyadh.

Dude Riyadh is such a huge city and literaly it takes more than an hour from the center to areas in the north or the south....thats in off-peak times...

It would be very difficult though to build it...and it needs a lot of consideration of where to establish these stations and rails....

but I honestly think they are in a deep need of it.

^ I've spent nearly 20 years there and still go there! I know how big the city is, its just that I'm not sure if people would really use it much considering the fact that Riyadh has probably one of the worst "mass" public transport, that is Bus network (I refrained from using the world "Public Transport" since Taxis are fairly cheap and easy to find there!). Anyhow, if they go on with the project then I'm all for it! It'll be a cool addition to a city I love more than my own hometown!

Good public transport is certainly a necessity. Traffic is becoming a big problem. Jeddah should get one too. An elevated light railway should be relatively easy to construct.

Saudi Arabia's cabinet has issued a law setting up a SR1 billion ($266.7 million) railway firm and authorised it to put up all or part of its shares for public offering, the SPA news agency said.

It said the firm, Saudi Arabian Railways, would oversee a major rail construction project in the desert kingdom linking southern and northern parts.

'The capital was set at SR1 billion divided into 100 million equal shares with a nominal value of SR10 each,' the agency said. 'An extra ordinary general assembly meeting can put all or part of the shares for public subscription.'

Officials said last week that four consortia led by France's Bouygues, Kuwait's Public Warehousing and two Saudi firms had pre-qualified for the multi-billion dollar rail project.

It said Saudi Binladin Group and Mada Company for Industrial and Commercial Investment were among those which pre-qualified for the project, called Landbridge, linking the north of the kingdom to its south. Industry sources estimate the project to be worth about $5 billion.

The build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract covers the construction of a 950 km line between the capital Riyadh and the Red Sea port of Jeddah and a 115-km link between Dammam and Jubail on the Gulf coast.

The lines will be connected to existing links and will serve the Riyadh, Mecca and Eastern regions, home to about 70 per cent of Saudi Arabia's population of about 24 million..Reuters

as i read in newspepar there many vilige dosnt has road!!!! i hope they make road in high qulity

by the way here in jeddah many road's should repair

Four consortia led by France's Bouygues, Kuwait's Public Warehousing and two Saudi firms have pre-qualified for a multi-billion dollar Saudi rail project, an official statement said.

The Saudi Railways Organisation (SRO) said Saudi Binladin Group and Mada Company for Industrial and Commercial Investment were among those which pre-qualified for the project, called Landbridge, linking the north of the kingdom to its south.

'We are delighted to reach this stage and I am confident that we will receive strong technical and financial bids from the pre-qualified consortia,' SRO president Khalid Al Yahya said in the statement.

The four consortia were among nine that had applied for qualification to bid for the scheme -- which the statement referred to as a 'multi-billion dollar project', and which industry sources estimate to be worth about $5 billion.
