A SOPHISTICATED integrated transportation hub, with part of its design taken after the ‘futuristic-looking’ KL International Airport (KLIA), will be built in Bandar Putra Kulim, Kedah, soon.

Kulim Municipal Council president Mohd Zohdi Saad said the RM11mil project, dubbed Kulim Sentral, would incorporate a bus terminal, taxi stand and shopping arcade.

He said the project, which would be built on a 2.28ha plot of land within the township, was slated for completion by 2015.

“The Kulim Sentral project, designed by Najib MS Architect, incorporates green technology that maximises energy and water conservation along with the planting of shrubs and trees.

“It will have over 40 bus parking bays, public car parking lots, a pair of arrival and departure halls, cafeteria, ticket counters, mini shoplots, surau, toilets and a landscaped atrium,” he said in a recent interview.

Mohd Zohdi said private developers keen on bidding to undertake the project through open tender, could contact the council’s Development Planning Standing Committee.

He also said construction work on the council’s new RM6.35mil office complex, located on a 1.6ha plot of land in the same township, was expected to be completed by August.

“We have been temporarily occupying several shophouse units in Taman Kenari Indah in Kulim.

“We will move into the new building as soon as the Occupation Certificate (OC) is issued. The particular project had been delayed by over eight years.

“There would also be a public square called Dataran Rakyat, and an open space located near the council complex for community programmes to be carried out there,” he added.

Mohd Zohdi said both projects were part of the city’s overall development plan as enlisted in the council’s Public Facilities Strategic Plan 2011-2015, which was aimed at turning Kulim into a modern city.

He said the particular township, dotted with numerous housing and commercial units, would also have a shopping complex and market, besides housing the district Tenaga Nasional Bhd office.
